Looking for a "quiet" muffler.
I realize that quiet is relative. I just finished my engine in my truck and man it's louder than ever! I love the sound at idle it just growls but apply any throttle at all and you are pissing people off and going to slowly go deaf.
As for the entire current setup. A mild built 383, Flowtech mid length headers, Custom built Y pipe 2.5 inch pipe to a stamped stainless steel Y section, 3 inch pipe to a single inlet single chambered Flowmaster knock off muffler, Then a 2.5 inch very short tailpipe section that exits to a dual oval tip. I am looking for something with a 3 inch inlet and outlet. I plan on changing out the tailpipe section to match the rest of the exhaust. Needs to flow well and tone it down a few decibels. I drive this truck everyday and while I love it loud I have to listen to the responsible part in me that says "hey you gotta drop your kid off at school in this thing". So with all that said what's going to be quiet and still flow well. It doesn't have to be stock quiet just not dragster loud. I took a decibel meter out there and it idles at 70-72db and will hit 90db just revving it up to about 2500rpm in park. So yeah it's loud. Driving windows up it's around 65db in the cab and will still reach near 80db when you lightly accelerate!

Re: Looking for a "quiet" muffler.
if you want to keep the nice gurgle and not piss people off i would go with a glass pack.
the tone it down enought to where people are not throwing things at you

Re: Looking for a "quiet" muffler.
I have thought about that route but they just don't last. I also haven't seen one with a 3 inch inlet/outlet.
I was looking at this http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...artNumber=true MagnaFlow long round case muffler. It's 40 inch long so I think that should do the trick. But I have never used one so I have no clue how they really would sound. Going to youtube now LOL.

I love Magnaflow for all the reasons you have stated. It is much quieter at idle and doesn't have the loud drone but still has a good sound with acceleration.

Re: Looking for a "quiet" muffler.
I have flowmaster 50 on my 2013, delta 70 on my 90 4x 4 and super 40 on my 454 ss. All sound good with no drone.

Re: Looking for a "quiet" muffler.
Speedy, Thanks for the offer but for now I am keeping the single in/out. If I ever decide to upgrade the engine with heads and a larger cam then I may go that route.
dishow, I have never really been a fan of flowmasters, when you say you have no drone I presume you have cats and factory size piping, I have always had drone issues with them on my custom setups, this single chamber flowmaster knock off is the one exception but I think that is due to the case being so small. Fatty, That's funny but we already have a Yaris and I can't even tell it's running most of the time. Still gets no less than 30mpg in town too! And it's way cheaper than a Prius! Well I ended up not being able to fit the really big one under the truck due to trying to keep everything short and tucked up close under the truck. I went with the Magnaflow 13743 it's overall length is 24 inches and diameter is 7 inches. I think it will still make the world of difference. I will post before and after videos up here so everyone can see how they sound as well as a detailed description of the exhaust system.

Re: Looking for a "quiet" muffler.
My '97 Tahoe has a single in/out Magnaflow. I'm not sure of the model # or size because it was already installed when I bought the vehicle. It's not loud at idle but has a decent bark under acceleration. However, I have a stock 350 Vortec. I think you'll be happy with the Magnaflow, & I look forward to hearing your sound clips. I need to make some videos of mine as well.

Re: Looking for a "quiet" muffler.
You could always get one of those dynamax VT mufflers, kind of pricey but they have that valve in them that makes them quiet until you step on it and force the valve open.

Re: Looking for a "quiet" muffler.
Well I forgot to make a video of the before sound but it was just plain loud. Almost like I had no muffler at all.
Now I am not too happy with the muffler I purchased either. Drones like crazy. Overall the volume is acceptable just the droning in the cab is not. Here is where it gets technical. What's the best way to determine how far from the collectors the muffler should be positioned? I am also looking at possibly adding a resonator to cancel out some of the low frequency noises. Also how can I determine what length resonator would do the best job. Longer would mean a deeper tone and shorter would be higher tone. Then diameter smaller=higher larger=lower? I am just going by what I know from musical instruments for these. Then once again if all comes down to the position as well. Also I know that the reverberation in the exhaust is not good for making power either. It comes from the speed in which the air travels. Slower=lower Faster=Higher. Maybe I am looking at this in a over critical manner but I am all about the challenge and what I find out and if I can produce something that really works and sounds good without restricting the flow then I would be glad to share the outcome and how it was done. So lets overview what I currently have Flowtech Mid length headers, 3 inch outlets reduced to 2.5 inch, crossover to passenger side 2.5 inch about 24 inches long, merged into a stamped steel Y piece, passenger side runs almost directly into the Y piece with about 8 inches of pipe, Next the Y section is 12 inches long and has a single 3 inch outlet on there, From that you go 28 inches to the muffler then the muffler is 7 inches round and 18 inch case length, Then I have about 10 more inches with a turndown. So as you can tell there isn't much pipe in this deal at all. I am working with stuff I already had around here with the exception of the muffler so now I am about out of supplies as well. I cannot move the muffler from it's position easily but I could add a small amount more pipe behind it.

Re: Looking for a "quiet" muffler.
I'm no expert, but I know you want the muffler to be behind the cab as much as possible, & the further back the tail pipe goes (& where it exits) should make a big difference. The turndowns may be causing your drone issue as well. I'm sure a resonator would help tone it down some. I assume you're not running cats? Mine still has the two factory ones, so I'm sure that makes a big difference in the sound of mine. Not to mention I still have factory pipe until you get to the larger section just before the muffler inlet. My muffler is also oval-shaped & looks to be bigger than the one you bought. I'd have to crawl under & measure to get exact specs. Pretty sure it's 3" outlet as well.

Re: Looking for a "quiet" muffler.
Yup no cats and big pipe. Probably larger than it needs to have to flow for the output of the engine but I have plans in the future to build it up more. Although I am not sure why I would want more power. Today some kid in a Mustang V6 thought my truck must just be loud but not really fast it took less than 1/2 throttle to make him look foolish LOL.
Anyway I am going to have to wait till I can afford to order up a couple more mandrel bent pieces of 3 inch pipe and change the point of exit. The muffler is almost exactly in the stock location maybe 4 inches closer to the engine at most so that means part of it is under the cab and part under the bed. As far as the turndown causing the drone it might be. I had it on there one way where the bend was right past the muffler and had about 6 inches of pipe going downward. The drone was almost non existent but the pipe hung down below the frame. I may go back with that but I would rather have it exit out from under the truck. I actually thought about getting another one of those Y sections and going out with dual pipes past the muffler but I don't really see that improving the performance any. Just a lot more welding and fitting pipe up.

Re: Looking for a "quiet" muffler.
I found something useful on the internet imagine that.
http://www.the370z.com/intake-exhaus...rks-great.html I am going to try it if adding more pipe doesn't work out.

Re: Looking for a "quiet" muffler.
Well I didn't end up using the resonator idea I mentioned in my previous post but I did manage to tone it down with a bit more pipe added as well as a slightly smaller diameter. It actually responded well to this addition as the bottom end perked up a bit and it's much quieter in the cab now. Pics and video soon.
