labor and materials must be REALLY expensive where he lives. Same results for less than half of what he's asking

Re: Holy smokes..144K invested in this thruck

I have to agree with jbgroby....I don't see where that kind of money is in this truck. Its a nice truck, clean inside and out and the work looks great, but not $75,000 or $144,000 kinda great. Im not sure the house in the pic is worth $144,000, so I seriously doubt he has $144,000 invested in the truck. I wish them the best of luck, but I think this one is aiming a little high.

Jon the house is in and around the net capital of the world, so strictly guessing the house is around 500k, the truck I bet he had everything done, never put a wrench on it, we know a person that built a 32 highboy back in `85 that did the same thing when done the tab was 80k, so its reasnable to assume he does have that much in it but he never touched it, not quite my idea of building a truck....!

Nice truck but it sounds like a bad investment to me.

Re: Holy smokes..144K invested in this thruck

Your probably correct on the house, and Im probably wrong for judging the cost of the truck based off the house. I surely don't want to offend anyone, so I apologize in advance if it seemed out of line. Even if he never touched a wrench on the truck, $144k just seems way high. I agree that it is a flawless truck, and I agree that it could be purchased far cheaper than built, but the price does seem kinda stretched and I agree that at that kind of money....bad investment.

144k is very possible, I deliver parts to a restoration shop that charges $55 an hour and it adds up with the quality of work that is in this truck.

Re: Holy smokes..144K invested in this thruck

Sad to say, it's not that difficult to get to $144K, especially if you're using a high-end shop with a high labor rate. Out here in Southern California, it's not uncommon to see shops with $75-$95 (and higher) per hour shop rates. That'll drive the price up in a hurry.

I dont care if it offends anyone. "A fool and his money are soon parted". This guy is a fool.

People should have the right to spend their money on whatever they wish, I'm just glad that this idiot paid off the house of the garage worker so the guy could keep turning wrenches in this bad economy.

Re: Holy smokes..144K invested in this thruck

This is the snobby editor in me, but if I was even going to THINK about spending a premium price on a premium vehicle, I expect at least a coherent, grammatically correct, and with no or at least very few misspelled words, at least an attempt at punctuation, writeup on the dang thing.

On the other hand, it's a nice truck, and if the price was more in line with my idea of reality, and I had the cash, I might look into it.

Re: Holy smokes..144K invested in this thruck

How about this... I think the guys really doesn't want to sell his truck at all, he just listed it so he could brag that he spent so much money of his truck.

I think most of us could build 10 pretty nice trucks ($14.4 ea) for this kind of money.

Any truck is only worth what someone else will pay for it.

Re: Holy smokes..144K invested in this thruck

I'll have to agree that there probably is 144K worth of labor and parts in the truck if the owner paid to have everything done. The body lines and gaps are about the best I've seen on one of these trucks... I definitely know the time and effort that goes into getting just that aspect sorted out. THEN you start on the bodywork, and this truck is very straight. That's 30-40K worth of metal/body/paint work to get one of these trucks to that level.

I had well over 1500 hours into the blue '65 I restored and we didn't take the cab off the frame or rebuild/restore the suspension... If I'd charged a normal shop rate of 50-75 per hour then that job would have cost 75-112K plus parts!

Some of the parts used kind of confused me though, like the wheels. Just sand cast/chromed everyday wheels that you could find in the back of a Motor Trend magazine... A 144k truck needs a set of forged/billet wheels custom built for the right offset/width for the truck. The red painted hood hinges/springs/bolts kinda looks out of place- needs to be detailed better than that. The underside of the cab is painted, but it's not slick- just painted. Other than the boxed frame, there's nothing special about the frame/suspension/brakes... I'd expect more than bolt on/stock parts for $144k!

Maybe I should do a slick paint job on Goldilocks and ask $150 when it's finished!

The last thing I would do is disrespect somebody who fearlessly pursues his passion without compromise. In fact, I'll even applaud this enthusiast for pouring his surplus money into his truck. At least, he has been doing his part to support a starving economy while nearly all others are squeezing pennies.
That said, If it were me spending that kind of money, I would have spent another thou and had the area behind the grill blacked out.

All that money spent on the body shop and they left off the sealing rubber where the upper fenders meet the bellums. (I did the same and had to go back and add it) thats how I know.

Re: Holy smokes..144K invested in this thruck

let's look at it this way. if you want good work done, you have to pay for it. I do understand quite a few of you have a problem contemplating what things cost out there for serious work especially if one doesn't have the funds, ego's and envy are difficult things.
I am doing some interior woodwork for a 27 caddie. there is a cast dash insert that was missing most of it's walnut inlay and has to be replaced and walnut trim for the upholstery on the doors and has to be made for 2 doors and repaired for 2 doors and there are inlay strips and inlay inserts, he has been looking all over NA for someone that can do it. I said that it could be done but that the dies are no longer avail we may have to invent the wheel over again. it is a trial and effort process, but I had him smiling yesterday with the latest results. it is a cost plus process and it is not for the faint of heart. here are some pics of the bare insert and the progress on the veneer. once I an satisfied with with what I can accomplish with the walnut insert then it will be glued and then all of the excess will be trimmed off the top and the nickel design will show through

That is where I live. Never seen the truck and I dont know how some one can spend 144K...Maybe if he got screwed by a couple shops and had other shops fix the work and he included that all in the price. I would give him 35k tops but thats me

If I was going to spend that kind of money building a truck it would be mostly on tools and expanding my garage.
