Re: need title
Oh there are always options. I mean you can buy a cab with a title and do a cab swap. You can move to a state that doesn't require a title for that old of a car. Some states will register with just a bill of sale. There has to be a paper trail on that truck somewhere.

Re: need title
It is highly illegal in NY to alter vins. I lived there most of my life, my Mom was Clerk of Court for Lake Grove for a long time.
I would keep calling DMV and even Albany (and whatever is head dmv in PA) until you get someone with a brain to answer. There are tons of vehicles out of Carlisle on the island and vice versa, there are ways to do it legally. FYI vin and title sales are against the site rules fully, so that will be edited for you. Good luck |

Re: need title
Sounds like you have to go back to NY where it was last registered, register it there so you have a registration receipt, and then go to PA with a bill of sale and a registration. You may have to have the truck with you to be inspected which may involve a trailer, a wrecker, or a friend with a dealer tag. If you have a friend who is a used car dealer, they may can help too. A final way is to get a artisans or mechanics title-like for an abandoned vehicle. The risk is that someone may actually come to the auction.
This is a classic example of why you should never work on a vehicle until you have it registered in your name. If I have a long-term project, I will title it and then let the tag lapse so I know I have a clean ownership. Then when I am ready, I can go back with a notarized letter saying it has been off the road for XX undergoing restotation. New tag, no penalties, and ready to go- no problem in Tennessee.

Re: need title
when I was in ny there was a company called broadway title that advertised in special interest autos...think they ran paperwork thru states whose laws weren't as strict...never personally used them so I don't know....but ny dmv can be a brick wall and 10 different people will give you 10 different answers...and calling the state is "press 1 press 4 press2 all representatives are busy call back later click!"...they just cut you off,you cant even hang on hold forever...

Re: need title
If you want it done right hire a title service company in New York. They are pros and can get it done if at all possible.

Re: need title
LIZ ty but I have done ever thing they supposedly required bill of sale ,death certificate ,power of attorney the only thing like I said was no registration because it was in the barn for a couple of years !! And I looked into Broadway title they were $800 and no guarantees !! and I have tried a lawyer he was the one dealing with NY and after almost 3 years with Pa and Ny I am at my wits end and the truck is not stolen and I know it's not legal in most places but what am I to do spend more $$ on a title than the whole build of the truck !!! And I knw for a fact that there are probly many who have done it on this site ... I knw it's not easy to want a nice old truck and be held up by a piece of paper .. Like I said sorry I didn't knw if it was ok to post it but figured I would try ....

Re: need title
You could sell it to a buddy in a state that does not require a tag receipt and just a bill of sale. Then take that and buy it back from him.

Re: need title
WHY would you restore a truck with no title? Sell it for parts and buy something with a title.

Re: need title
Do you have a photo of said truck. Would love to see what you have going on. How clean is the cab? Maybe worth buying a titled cab.

Re: need title
I don't believe in lying buy as interchangable as these trucks are i have seen people who find someone with a donor truck and take the vin plate off the door jam and use that matching title for there truck. Glad i live in nc and not ny. Good luck though bud. Hope you get it resolved.

Re: need title
In order to transfer from a no title state to a title state you probably need( my experience, I did) a notarized bill of sale (or other legal document) showing you are the new owner. The vehicle registration must be current in the state it is leaving and must be registered to the individual who gave you the bill of sale. If grandpa or whoever handed the vehicle down to you, have them bring the registration up to date and write you a bill of sale. The bill of sale can then transfer ownership to the new title state and a title issued. I had a similar issue but we have a way around that here as many states do. If you know anyone who works at a used car dealer, auto wrecker service, impound yard, or junk yard they all have ways to get titles for vehicles like this, typically through a title specialist. Good luck!

Re: need title
I believe in texas you can get a builders title. Wich basically proves you built it and how much money you have tied up in it. Then if somewhere down the road some one comes up and tries to claim the said abandoned vehical they would have to buy you out in order to take possesion. Would suck to have to give your baby up but at least its not a total loss. With that said if you know the car was not stolen then it would allow you to register it hassel free with no title. I dont know if they do that in your state but its a shot in the dark

That's a bummer for sure. If NY doesn't require titles for anything pre '71 I would think that PA would issue a title from a NY bill of sale... Just thinkin' out loud here. LockDoc
