Okay I am just documenting my rebuild of a Quadrajet carb.

It's not going to be a step by step process but you will see my progress nonetheless.

First all I have two Quadrajet carburetors just lying around and wanted to try my hand at rebuilding them. They are a bit of a pain to get apart but once you do them two plus times you understand the basics.

I'll show you want I use to clean and degrease the carburetor. GUNK Carb & parts cleaner & Purple Power cleaner is my choices. I also will be using a red 3m cleaning pad for those hard to remove carbon and other stains.

When I first starting removing the top of the carburetor I draw a rough outline of the top view. Then once I started removing screws I put them on a scrap piece of cardboard in the correct order.

Be sure and get the control rods knurled, that's a neccessary step if you want it to work properly. Old QJ's allow air to come in there and totally screw up the air fuel mixture.

Good tips everyone.

On this one the throttle shaft and plate seems tight, I'll double check it all during assembly.

Found lots of white scale still attached to the inside of the Quadrajet. Used braker cleaner and a brass scratcher to clean it up a bit.

Still waiting on the rebuild kit to arrive. Thanks evilbay!

Noticed PO cut the acc. pump, why no idea.

Started to JB Weld the metering wells and other known areas that leak. Then used Eastwood paint on some of the pieces.

I'll post up the rest of the pictures later today. Looks like I'm working today.

I had an epoxy on mine that was all deteriorated. I just cleaned it out. If my carb is a reman, it should be new enough that the bowl isn't leaking. If it does, I'll open it up again and reseal it. I saw online it was recommended to tap the holes and put in screws but I didn't see enough meat there to make me comfortable trying that.

I hate quadrajets. Working on this one reminded me why I ditched all my others for holleys. Maybe this one too if I can't get it right.

Okay here are some pics of some of my progress.

If you're like me and have little patience then just do a little at a time and come back to it (or go rebuild a Holley)

One trick I found is to use white grease spray on, on your gaskets. That way in case you need to take apart your carb it doesn't stick too badly and you can reuse your gaskets.

Make rebuild kit did not have a fuel filter, so I bought one from the local parts store.


Then used Teflon tape on the threads.

One of the worst things you can do on the inlet is use teflon tape. Easist way to strip those fine threads out of there.
THese guys can fix your inlet threads with a heli-coil.

I thought I was shipping mine there tomorrow but just got off the phone with a buddy who owns a garage. He said he's got a couple old quadrajets that I am welcome to root through for parts. If I can find a decent base, I am all set! Fingers are crossed....

Maybe so, but its not stripped.

i have found that teflon does not hold up to petroleum. permatex makes a great alternative....

Got the carb together this evening.

Mind you it is stripped down but wanted to test it before throwing all the other choke and other attachments on the Quadrajet.

I found what helped me the most was going on YouTube.Com and copying what most of the people did there. Then I'm basically using off the shelf items to clean the carb the best I can. Still finding lots of nicks and other holes that still need to be thoroughly cleaned. I have been soaking the main body in Carb cleaner for DAYS. And still finding other areas that this solvent based cleaner is just not breaking up.

Trying to use Brake Cleaner spray as well to see if that helps. Along with Q-tips trying to swab all areas until they come out clean. Then I'll the start assembly process.

Slow process since I'm finding out these cleaners do not work as well as I am hoping they would.

I did mine today- its a recent reman but the truck had sat nearly 9 months when I got it. When it started stalling on my last night (second drive), I figured I better open her up, clean it out and check out the float/needle and seat. All my parts are still pretty new so I just mostly cleaned it. Found a couple little things wrong- the needle wasn't wired to the float. There was something else jacked up but I already forget (damn carb cleaner fumes)....



I had one show-stopper though. When I was finishing the reassembly, I found somebody had previously stripped the fuel filter retainer nut. When I couldn't get it started, I inspected the threads on both sides and saw the threads in the carb body looked funny. I pulled them out before I realized they were heli-coil. Now I need to find someone with a big enough heli-coil set to redo it. Always something....

Yours is by far cleaning that what I started with.

Mine was gunked up very badly and honestly it needed something I do not have access to, which is a sonic cleaner! But I made due with the cleaners I had. Crossing my fingers all goes well it and runs okay.

Yep, mine is a recent remanufacture. I don't know who did it but it was one of the cleaner carbs I've taken apart. Too bad that fuel inlet is screwed up... I googled it and its pretty common I guess.

I hope I can remember where all the linkages go (I did take pics). I think this carb is unnecessarily overcomplicated.

THe seal isn't on the threads. It's on the gasket.

Yeah I know, kit did not come with one.
