1947 gmc 450
What is the ton rating on this truck? Are brake parts Available any where for it? Looking at a very nice firetruck with no breaks. Of course, it's located in the mountains. Can't load pics from my cell phone.

Anybody have a source for brake parts on this? How about a diagram of the brake system for this 1947 GMC 450 model. Can't seem to find anything other than buying a manual on e-bay. Can't wait that long. Thanks. Jim

Jim,
you may have to piece together what you need. Find a local store that deals Wagner or Raybestos. Then find an older guy behind the counter. More than likely if it is wheel cyl seals are the issue, he should be able to locate you the cups. If it is the master, you might have to look a bit harder. As far as a diagram, cant help you there. Does it have a hydrovac on it? Another place that you might find info is at stovebolt.com.

Check over at stovebolt.com in the big bolt forum. There are a bunch of guys over there that will be able to help you and probably give you the part numbers for the parts.

Thanks guys. The trucks mine. Just waiting till Friday for the wrecker to deliver it. Got a young kid at NAPA to dig in the books and found a rebuild kit for the master cylinder. Has to come from factory though. Probably just build a bracket and mount a modern 2 cup cylinder.

I second that for checking over at Stovebolt. There is one guy in particular over there who is a specialist in older parts. Brakes is also one of his specialties.

Just took my 68 C20 for a test drive today after putting disk brakes on front with hydraboost. Very impressed. Stops much better. May go something similar. Have to see what engine and tranny I go with. Have to polish it up first so the neighbors don't think I'm starting a junkyard over here.

Anybody tell me exactly what year this is. DMV is telling me VIN comes back something else, but she's not sure what. She's going to do some searching she says. I thought the body style was 48-54. Seller advertised as a 47.

I'm not that good with these older trucks, but I believe they were made from '47 to '55 (1st Design). If no one can help you on here, go over to Stovebolt.com and click onto Big Bolts. There are some pretty good experts over there.

Tomorrow hope to get the brakes bled and tested. Parking brake works. Battery was dead because somebody left the key on. Charging it back up. And its still 6 volt system. At least that's what my battery charger says.

Cool truck. Turn down door handles and no vent windows are 1950 and earlier. What does the cab to door seal (cab windlass) look like? Is it screwed in or does it install in a U channel? I know '48 Chevrolet's had a small hole in each side of the dash so a screwdriver could be used to install the windlass. GMC's might be different but I would guess they are not.

Cleaned the engine up some today looking for serial numbers. Went for a ride too. It's running good. It's got an electric fuel pump. Made a relay setup with a 30 amp ckt breaker and a bus terminal running off an ignition on ckt. That way I'll have some cots available. The relay is a 12 volt, and its not closing on 6 volts, or its a bad relay. I'll check tomorrow.

Thanks. Cleaned up the engine some. Found the serial numbers. Wired up the electric fuel pump via a ckt breaker and relay, and junction block. It had been wired off the side of a heater switch. The relay is bad or won't fire off 6 volts. Is that normal. Will try different relay tomorrow. Put a jumper in and took it for a ride. Runs good.

Got the numbers for the tranny and engine. Engine block numbers 2135412, with date code I believe E180, was hard to see that with mirror. The head is E4-0 and 2193417. Intake 2193425. The tranny is a Clark 5 speed, Model 202V323,for GMC 2227792, SN 51479P. It has a PTO, Waterous of St. Paul, B046. The truck is a GMC 450, Number HC 453 2319. Does this help narrow the year down. DMV called and said I'd need to get a bonded title. Called one company. Got quoted $875. Told them thanks, but that ain't happening.

I responded to your post over at Stovebolts earlier. So far it all looks original and your Dates Codes decipher to May of 1950, as what I believe is what you have there.

Thanks Bill. Got the VIN verified by the marshal of the town where I live. Funny, he used to be a fireman and was real familiar with how the Boardman firetrucks work. Showed me a lot on mine. Also, he used to restore and hotrod old cars and trucks. had a great talk with him. Jim
