Beer Keg Fuel Tank and a TBI?
I have searched the forums looking for beer keg gas tanks and i have found quite a few. None for a TBI though. Can it be done? or only with carb setups? what's involved.

TBI would require the ability to mount and plumb the fuel pump inside the tank, plus a return line.
It would be a bit more involved, but not impossible.

You would have to use a inline pump to fuel the TBI set up.

I don't know much about fuel systems but i was told the line is pressurized not the tank right? So the inline makes sense. Would something like this tank work? it has a spot for a sending unit. I'm looking to put a tank in the bed but i don't want a standard square fuel cell.

The thing about inline pumps is that you would have to be very careful about fuel pressure. IIRC, they need 12-15 psi to work correctly, which is a pretty narrow window.

Late 80's F*rd inline from a pickup. Puts out 40 couple pounds and enough volume to take care of things (try Airtex E2000). Just plumb in your return line.

Been looking through a few of the threads. Seems some of the swaps, people have used an inline pump. Would this work for a Keg or a similar sand rail tank pictured earlier? You wouldn't need baffles with an inline, but you would need a return. Where is the regulator located? can that be external as well? I have found proper TBI external replacement pumps on ebay. At about 14-17 psi.

GM tbi's have a regulator built in. It is located behind the injector pods in the middle of the body. Both lines run into it. Yes they run at about 15 psi. The extra pressure will be bled off by the regulator.

ok So i have been looking at sand rail tanks (spun aluminum) and inline pumps as well. The only decision i haven't come up with is if i should get a tank with a sending unit? The sending unit is specific to the tank. A stock sending unit can't be used. So here's my question. If i buy the tank, inline pump and sending unit, with the sending unit work with my stock gauge? the rating for the sending unit is 240-30 ohms. Does anyone know what the ohms are of a stock 87 gauge are?

You need to get sending unit that has 0 to 90 Ohm resistance range. GM used 0 (full) 90 (empty) since early 60's.

Why would TBI require an inline pump? It needs a pump capäble of sustaining enough flow that you can regulate the pressure to 10-14 psi. this can be done with most electric fuel pumps, internal or external. Even the ones rated at a much higher dead head pressure. Pumps create flow volume, not pressure. A restriction, in this case the regulator gives you your system pressure.
Those sending units in the pic above are available in 0-ohm. They are Wema units? I have some of them and they are the correct range. That airtex pumpo can easily b e regulated down with a return style regulator (or use the regulator in the TBI like factory, it works just fine) I have done this many many times. I always swapped out TBI pumps for higher capacity TPI pumps because new the TBI pumps barely cut it and when they wear the pressure drops off because it can not sustain full flow. The TPI pumps don't have this issue. |

The problem with high flow fuel pumps (TPI, Vortec, etc) that gasoline (petrol as they call it in EU) heats up due to excessive circulation through the fuel delivery - return system. Yes, fuel pressure regulator will bleed excess pressure off and bring fuel pressure, to a desired level, as governed by FPR spring tension.
In my TBI conversions I have used Carter P5001 inline pump that provide 20 PSI maximum pressure and provide sufficient fuel flow for most stock or slightly overstock TBI applications. Carter pumps are relatively quiet and seem to last (6 years now).... //RF
