Refueling side tanks

My '73 has side tanks and it seems like every time I refuel a lot of the fuel runs down the side of the truck. Any suggestions?

Re: Refueling side tanks

This is a very common problem. Truthfully no. Only way is to slowly slowly fill up. And cali has those weird pumps which adds fuel to the fire... Lol

CRank the fill nozzle almost straight up so the hose is at about 2 oclock and you won't get any mess.

That's pretty much what I've been doing but more of the twelve o'clock position. I'll try two o'clock. California gas nozzles suck!!!

I do the same and then angle the tip down.

Re: Refueling side tanks

Years ago to smog my 78 truck. I put in a gas filler neck restricter that looks like this one at Pollution Control Inc. You push this thing down the filler neck and the nozzle goes into the center hole. The prongs keep it from coming loose. It is a wierd looking thing but it works pretty good.
I do not know how to post the email link. to it.

Re: Refueling side tanks

I usually just wedge a rolled up piece of paper towell under the nozzle (between the filler neck and the box side/inside the filler door).

It catches any spillage before it hits the painted surface.

AHA! I had thought about something similar since some filler necks have the small orifice welded down in them. Heres the link mentioned above

Re: Refueling side tanks

That's weird, I've been filling my '77 (stepside) for years and never noticed a problem, is there something different between them?

I ask because that may give you an answer, simply swap out parts as needed (like the filler neck) with a later model truck.

Otherwise a rag in the bed would be convenient to catch any overflow like Keith said.
