C20 Front brake drum removal - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Tried removing the front brake drum but this drum has 2 flat head screws in it.

I tried:

Heat
Lubricant
Impact screwdriver
Chisel (break loose the rust)

They won't budge. Any ideas? Can I drill them out? If so can I find replacements?

Try drilling them out. Probably don't need to replace them since lug nuts hold them on. Maybe remove the front wheel bearing and see if you can pull the whole thing off.

Yeah, pull the cap cover off, straighten and remove the pin, then pull off the bearing and the whole thing should slide off. It happened on mine when TBone and I replaced my front brakes.

original drums are rivited in place from the factory on the hubs and need to b drilled out in order to remove the drum from the hubs

Are you replacing the drums?

If yes, then you need to find a way to remove the screws. It sounds like it is time for the drill.

If you are not replacing the drums then as Mister-B mentioned, pull the drum and hub together.

Whoa guys! no drilling required on a C20. What you need is what they call an "impact driver", to remove those flathead screws. Sears will be your best bet. They are still a bugger to get out, but take your time, make sure you don't strip them out, or you WILL have to drill them out. Basically what an impact driver does, you push the screw tip in and twist the direction you need to turn the screw, and hit it with a hammer. All four corners of a C20 will have these flathead screws.

Just pull the whole hub as mentioned. I did mine with relative ease, but that was several years ago, 16 years newer.

LOL sorry nolimit, somehow I missed the "impact screwdriver" in your list..... yikes, I guess either pull the assembly off or drill the heads off as mentioned. guess I better stick to "baffling them with bull".....

I was hoping to put new shoes on and call it a day. If I pull the hub isn't the drum still attached?

I say the following as a long time C20 owner.
If you are just replacing shoes then there is no need to separate drum from hub. Pull the hub and drum as one unit. You will be able to clean and inspect the wheel bearings & races. Then repack with grease, install and adjust.

If drums need turning take the whole asm in to a machine shop. Usually they can drill the screws out for a little extra.

Progress and Education

If the drums need to be machined it is best to leave them mounted to the hub. The shop can mount a drum/hub assembly the same way they mount a rotor with a built in hub. This will insure the least amount of run out for the assembly.

I've even seen guys pull the hub/drum/tire/wheel all in one piece to change shoes on one that wasn't too worn.I don't recall if it was a 67-72 but I believe the adjuster holes were in the backing plates and accessible with the tire/wheel on.

I know this thread is old but I figured I should finish it off.

Back in the 70's I helped my dad change the brake shoes on his C10. As most of you know the wheel comes off and the drum comes off (straight forward).

What is different about the C20 is the wheel comes off, then you remove the dust cover, wheel bearing nut, and that releases the bearing and drum together.

I remember dad struggling with pliers and screw drivers to put springs back on. Having the right brake tools makes the job MUCH easier.

I still need to do the rear brakes but knowing the C20 process is different is worth noting.
