Is there a quick way to tell the difference between a 67-68

I drive by either a 67 or 68 truck every day. I'm looking for a 67 4x4 long bed that at least runs and dives and I'm not sure which year this one is. It's in pretty rough shape but that’s kind of what I'm looking for. I would like to know for sure it is a 67 before I go knocking on the guy's door.

The only way I know how to tell the difference between a 67 and a 68 is the 67's didn't have side marker lights. This truck has side marker lights on the front fenders but nothing on the bed. Judging by the condition it could have easily had the front clip from another truck on put on it or the bed could have been swapped as well.

Are there any other easy to see differences between these two years?

The side marker turn signals is about the only easy way.

Is it a small window by chance? That's one way to confirm a 67 only cab.

There's also going to be little differences like arm rests, and interior paint. Most everything aside from the spid and vin can easily be changed adding confusion to which year in particular. That being said, do you have to have a 67? I don't mean to insult you at all, but not knowing the differences, unless you're wanting a 67 small window sans marker lights, does it matter if you find a 68, or 69-72 with an early front clip? Broadening the search makes the results easier to find.

I really want a 67 big window simply because I won't have to deal with my states emission laws and BS. In my state 67 and before is exempt from any emission regulations and 68 and later must pass an emission test every year. So that will make one less thing to have to deal with every year.

Pardon my ignorance but what is spid?

I'm basically planning on doing a complete frame off so it doesn't really matter that the grille and front fenders are different on the 67-68 because I could always change them later. Actually the 67-68 grill is my least favorite out of the 3 different styles so I would be changing that. The big sliding rear window is a must though.

The SPID is the Service Parts Identification located on the inside of the glove box door.

Okay that makes sense. In California, 74 and back is smog exempt. The SPID, is the decal on the inside of the glove box door. It contains options and a printed vin that would contain the model year, and other pertinent information to the truck, granted it matched the year on the body attached vin. Honestly, you should just go talk to the owner and be candid about your concerns and interest in the truck. Hopefully it doesn't have that built in mark up that comes with other smog exempt vehicles! Here in Ca you could expect another 1k on a price tag, even if it needs a ground up resto.

It's almost laughable that California has more friendly emission laws than Nevada. You would think it would be the other way around ha ha…..

Is the VIN # on this truck in the same spot as every other vehicle below the driver's side front windshield?

VIN is located on the body below the drivers door latch. It is also located on the SPID.

Also, the VIN should read something like CE147XXXXXXX. The 7 indicates 67, 8 indicates 68, 0 indicates 70, etc. http://outintheshop.com/vin_decode.html

Wink Re: Is there a quick way to tell the difference between a 67-68

Also one should note that if the fenders and bedsides dont match then anything is possible. My truck appears to be a 67 small back glass but the cab is the only true 67 part on it. The front end is repop the dash is 61 the doors are 72 burb(converted) and the bed is 70 oh yea and the frame and title match the vin they are 68 gmc lol! What a beater!!!!!top that off with 02 engine, ford lights, jeep steering shaft, and all the other car and truck parts it just better said its a mutt!

Re: Is there a quick way to tell the difference between a 67-68

From the outside and not real close up you can tell a '67 by the wing vents not having the round chrome piece through the glass for the window latch.

Up close the dash has differences, even if arm rests were changed. The heat controls have a black background rather than aluminum with ribs. That's most obvious if you can't gauge the size of the ignition bezel, flatter ashtray face,or smaller knobs with ribs on the outer edge. The cowl vent handles are funny triangle looking things, not round knobs

Re: Is there a quick way to tell the difference between a 67-68

A friend of mine had a 67 C/20 with a I6 and that truck only had provisions for the driver side sun visor. There was nothing for the passenger side.

It is the only one I think I have ever seen like that.

I believe it is pre catyletic converter, 75 was first for cats, so i believe it 74 down exempt. But lets not brag about it or everyone will move here..
