Safety Equipment 4 Hauling Your Toy
*Mods move if needed. (Didn't have a clue where to post this)
Ok, I bought a New trailer (First "New" one I have ever owned) and it uses the swivel style "D" rings in the floor. I have never owned any of the "Nice" ratchet straps but want to get some. (All of mine are the 3" wide with a huge double underhook end) I've looked at "Mac's" brand on Amazon, also the Vulcan brand. (I want the style that "Clip" in and plan to run axle style loops) What are you using and why? Any issues? complaints? regrets? Thanks in advance for your help

I strap to the frame. Doesn't overwork the shocks and the trailer is more stable since the car isn't bouncing around.

That's pretty much what I use too for straps with just the floor D rings in my race trailer, in my sled trailer I have E-tracking on the floor, my next car hauler will have it too.

I use axle straps and ratchet straps from Jegs.
Their house brand. No issues ever.

I always use a cross strap configuration. I don't have a suspended race car anymore, but when I was racing Super Gas, I strapped down the front frame to compress the springs. I welded attachment points on my rearend housing for my rear straps, and I used an inflatable Chassis Saver under the rear crossmember to reduce wear and tear on my shocks/springs.

I Haul cars for a living. Straps over the top of the tires. IMO the best way for the car and trailer.

I say it DEPENDS on the suspension you have!
1000's of $'s coil-over drag shocks are not real happy being beat up carrying the load of the car on a bumpy ride home. Once you spend all the time to get everything tweeked exactly right in the suspension,, it's time to support the chassis on stands /or a bladder under the chassis to carry the load, then strap the CHASSIS down. Your looking to take the load off the suspension and keep the car stable. Not allow it to beat up on the setup all the ride home. Don't mis-understand.... I surely don't disagree with KQQL that everything bound down tight makes for a harsh ride with the trailer suspension doing all the work. But my point is when your trying to protect a set-up in a $10-12k suspension, in a 2600 pound car.... it's a very different ballgame than hauling a 2-1/2 ton street / strip cruiser, or show car around that has basically stock suspension. But to the original question,, The Jeggs 'kits' are about as cheap of a 10,000 pound strap as your going to get, and it has decent quality components. The ends are surprisingly strong. http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performan...oductId=870983 Like 71dragtruck, I was lucky enough to have the "E-Track" in the enclosed,, WOW are those nice. You can move the rind to anywhere that fits the load. I saw a picture of one of there JimGlo trailers off the side of the road upside down,. with a 68ish Pontiac hanging from the E-track tiedowns. One side was really screwed but the heavy car was hanging from the E-track. Those are the greatest trailer items I've seen to date.

Maybe.. after watching my cars bounce down the highways for 20+ years tying them to frame vs: tires is much easier on both the car/ truck.
If you were truly worried about the suspension you would haul it on jacks as you said. Posted via Mobile Device

When I was towing cars it would depend on what we were hauling, light cars and trucks we would use tire straps, 3/4 ton and up we used j hooks and chains

There's a guy that sells straps at our toe local good-guys shows. This year we picked up his straps and have been happy with them. Made several trips without any issues. They're similar to sdailey's straps and similar to lolife's. I've used Keith's more than once so when it was finally time to buy some I copied his setup and never looked back.

On the Yellow truck i have a block of wood built for the front crossmember and 2 square pieces of plywood with cheapy HF jack stands for the rear . I place these before tightening the straps to keep the shocks from being worn out in the trailer .

On door cars I always crossed them. I would then tie the frame so the car wouldn't bounce if I had something with coil overs. On my dragsters I went over the rear slicks, supported the chassis in 2 places, and then went over the chassis on the 4 link car. Shocks will actually get hot on a long tow if you just let the car bounce, not good on a high dollar set of shocks. I used Jeg's straps and axle straps. Whatever you buy in either, buy the heaviest rated. The cheaper axle straps are junk.

I tie mine down by the frame. The longest trip racing I have been on is close to two thousand miles. I would rather not wear out my springs and shocks on the race truck.
