3800 series 2 supercharged?

So I have an 01 police impala and it has 3800 series 2 non-supercharged and i love it! At first I thought about taking a supercharged version out of an 01 regal but then i saw my truck and thought to myself its been going nowhere for way to long. What do you guys think about it? any advice or maybe someone has done it?! I found a 2000 regal for $750 it was wrecked in the rear but motor was untouched.
Oh! what transmission do you recommend I currently have the stock 3 speed. I didnt think it would work with it haha

You could use a 4L60E out of a 90's Camaro to make it RWD.

I know a guy that has a supercharged Ls regal. Has been upgraded with pulleys and injectors pretty cool car. Not sure if the bell housing bolt pattern is correct though being transaxle engines

Re: 3800 series 2 supercharged?

I am to interested in such a swap, and there is plenty of info out there on Camaro forums who use a similar engine.

From the measurements I took at pick a part one day I figured out roughly how it would need to be done.

You'll have to move the engine roughly 4 inches forward to allow for the throttle body at the back of the supercharger. You can either relocate the TB or have an angled air inlet.

Also you will need a Camaro radiator because of the coolant path's. Then you can use Camaro hoses likely to keep the mods down.

Then re-route, and cut down on the coolant crossovers the series 2 has. These are a few external, and should be easy.

Grab Camaro series headers or at least use Camaro exhaust manifolds.

Have your speedo converted to digital feed as the 4L60 you'll need has no speedo cable.

On the power side my guess is something like 3.55 gears to help get the C10 moving, but also likely your truck will now be a glorified car.

For programming I like HP tuners then you can tune it for better performance, but also get rid of items you don't need.

Don't forget you'll have to fab up mounts.

Re: 3800 series 2 supercharged?

Oh you can do it all right, anything can be done. Using Camaro parts is a good start, Ziegelsteinfaust laid it out pretty well.

The problem you're going to have is that it's going to be a lot of time and money for 250hp. A 250hp small block could be built from used parts for almost free. 250hp makes a Bonneville scoot, but in a pickup you'll be less than impressed. I'd estimate a 6.0 could be swapped in for similar cost and quite a bit more fun. Sure, there are lots of speed parts for a 3800, but that's more time and money spent on top of what was already spent to get the engine installed and running. If blowers are your thing that speed money could buy a 142 blower to bolt on a wheezy old 250hp small block and have some fun without being overkill and blowing things up.

Don't get me wrong, superchargers are cool, and a 3800 is a rock solid motor, it's just not very well suited for a pickup and would likely seem pretty weak.

Start a build thread if you decide to do it though, you'll have a pretty unique combo and I'd love to read about it!

Re: 3800 series 2 supercharged?

You can get over 300 with a tune, and pulleys.

The guy above is pretty right. It is a lot of work for minimal gains, and when a warm 350 will be so close.

If I were going to do the series 2 swap I would shoot for mpg. It is the one spot where you will get a cost benefit for the effort out of it. This is where a small torquey motor can really shine, and with the supercharger on tap plenty of torque for moving it along.

So if was my truck I would slam it with a 5/7, run some 700 treadware tires on 15 or 16 inch rims, and see what you can do.

Re: 3800 series 2 supercharged?

Thanks for the replies guys!
My other concern is the electronics. computer, and harness and what not. Ive done plenty of motor swaps new to new old to old but never form old to new kind of deal.

plenty of info to get me headed in the right direction and As far as gains im not shooting for hp really. The mileage was more of a concern and i am really comfortable with these motors. I`m going to look at one today and maybe we can work out a deal! i will keep you guys posted.

As far as using the 4l60 would it be a straight bolt up deal? just moding lines and changing the speedo. I will look into just swapping out gauges completely with the camaro. also at some point i would like to a a full air ride setup ( in reply to Ziegelsteinfaust)

Re: 3800 series 2 supercharged?

You could also use the 5 speed from a late 90's camaro if you wanted a stick shift, the Camaro flywheel and clutch kit will work too.

I like the idea of keeping it stick shift!

Re: 3800 series 2 supercharged?

yeah I hear ya. among my research and looking for a series 2 I ran across a few guys who had used an lt1 with the 4l60 which is not a bad idea all together. so idk guys! hate to get your hopes up but its looking to be to much of an adventure without enough treasure to me! for the series 2 swap ive got nothing but time to figure the engine situation out
