Removing oil pan
I have a 70 jimmy 4x4 can you remove the oil pan when motor is still in the truck.

Yes, you should be able to. You may have to remove the engine mount bolts, the fan shroud and jack the engine up a little to clear your cross member. It has been a while but I think 4 x 4 cross-members are easy to work around.
You may not have to jack anything up. Just make sure it comes out with out fighting it. If you fight it coming out, then you fight it going back in and most likely mess up a new gasket in the process. Take your time and it should be a real easy job.

Gary, its been awhile, but IIRC, i was able to remove the whole cross member by sliding one side forward and the other side back. I had my motor supported from the top by way of a carb plate and hoist. I think that i had to disassemble the engine stands from the crossmember.
You can get more room by removing the distrubtor cap, and going higher on the hoist. Also, i think if you rotate your engine so that the first journal is at the 12 o'clock position, it will give you more clearance if you dont remove the cross member.... I know your truck is all stock, but this is why we had DIY4X4 modify their one piece crossmember to have the flanges welded in so i could drop the center section of the cross member. Makes it so much easier to remove the pan, without unbolting the engine from motor mounts Good luck on your fix, and wish you many more trophies in your future....truck looks great! PS....the fan shroud will have to be unbolted, and it might not be a bad idea to unbolt the down pipe from the manifolds, but maybe not. Hope you are using the one piece gasket with the alligning pins that go into the mounting bolts for the oil pan. Makes it easier to install gasket without having gasket drop down

Last time I did it I unbolted the crossmember to slide it forward AND unbolted the engine mounts to jack the engine up. One thing to note - keep an eye on your distributor when you jack the engine up. If you have HEI, the cap will hit the firewall right away. A stock dizzy cap may also hit, but the valve cover may hit first. Remove the cap for a little more wiggle room.
