Barn find!!

Found this less than a mile from my house, been sitting in a barn for 28 yrs. The funny thing is I know the guy that owned it well, we graduated together in 1981, I drove the truck in 1980 right after he got it. I've talked to him numerous times over the years, fixed his cars at my bodyshop several times, just never talked about the truck, I just assumed he had gotten rid of it. He brought his sons Mustang in for repairs a few weeks ago and we started talking about the old days, I mentioned that super clean 65 truck he scored in high school and how I was sure it had been gone for decades. He said, you know that thing has been sitting in my barn since 1985. I couldn't believe he still had it, and was willing to sell it. His tassle off his graduation cap was still hanging on the rear view mirror and there was a Commodores cassette in the glove box. LOL The body is incredibly straight, no rust at all, other than surface rust. I write estimates all the time on 4 and 5 yr old trucks thst need more bodywork than this thing! I just bought a 2011 Camaro SS for the engine & trans. I,m starting to gather up pieces and will start a build thread when I make some progress. Even have the license plates ordered!

Re: Barn find!!

Unless you are dead set against this being the start of the build thread, why not???

Sweet Truck...
but I have a question... I thought the Synergy Green Camaros were only built in the v-6 trim... Didn't know Chevy built the Green ones as a SS. Nice Score Nonetheless!!!

Please tell me the Camaro has the 6 Speed Stick...

Almost forgot to ask, I know you mentioned Bodyshop, are you planning on Keeping the Patina???
I'm in for this one!!!

Not sure about color options, but the Camaro is definately an SS with the 430HP 6.2. It's an automatic. I wanted to leave it as is as far as the paint goes but my 2 teenage sons really want to paint it so that's probably what we'll do, besides a body this straight needs some slick black paint on it!

Re: Barn find!!

a dropmember and suspension from Scotts Hotrod shop will be my next purchase. Has anybody here used one of these? Also we have been looking at widening the rear fenders about 2 1/2 inches instead of tubbing it. Anybody seen this done and what does it look like? thanks

Re: Barn find!!

Welcome to the forum. I agree just continue on with this thread as your build thread. It has to start somewhere. What an incredible story and truck. That thing is beautiful, and already the “correct” color! Looking forward to the updates.

IMHO widened fenders don’t look all that good because most leave the steps regular size in the front and taper larger in the rear and end up looking goofy. The best modification I’ve seen is widening the box which brings the fenders outboard so they match up with the 60-66 cab, like they should have in 1960!

Post #10 on the thread below show’s how one person accomplished this:

thanks And I can see where the steps will be the biggest problem, but I think I may have an idea on how to make it work and look really trick. I really don't want to tub the bed because of other ideas I have for the inside of the bed. Just going have to fab some stuff up and see what works. Thanks for the replies and kind words, I need all the help I can get! I've been into race cars and muscle cars all my life, this will be the first truck I've built.

Re: Barn find!!

Great find and story so far.

With your boys onto it as well, I thought that with the history and tassle it already has and your sons "graduating" to a propper truck, it could have been called "The Graduate"

Will be following this build along with many others.

Thanks for sharing and keep the updates coming, we all learn from each other on here.

My youngest graduates this year. We're holding off getting started because they want to drive it some before we take it apart. They had never seen a 3 speed on the column! When I told them it had 3 on the tree they both looked puzzled! lol We just put the head back on it last night, had a valve job done, valves were sticking. We drained the fuel tank, put a new fuel pump ,carb kit, and of course all brake components, and put some old wheels and tires on it we had laying around. It runs and drives great, clutch and shifter works perfect. I drove it to work this morning. I'm going to drive it a couple of days to make sure everything is okay, then let them play with it awhile, my youngest wants to start driving it to school, which by the way is the same high school it was driven to 33 years ago!

Re: Barn find!!

I love it!! They are only original once, and original paint is really a rare bird.

Re: Barn find!!

Does anyone know if you have to do any firewall or floor mods to make the 6.2 and 6L80E fit in this truck?
