4L65e swap

I did a search and had trouble finding anything helpful, what does it take to swap a 4L65e into one of our trucks? I'm not worried about the electrical side, just mounts and driveshaft. anyone make a kit?

The truck is a '70 2wd lwb GMC.

I install a 2004 ls lq9 with a 4l60e. I used the engine mounts and rear trani mount kit from early classic enterprise. The original drive shaft from the truck when it had the six cylinder three speed trani was the correct length. Just had to use an off set ujoint and put the trani yoke on. Worked good. Also the oem shifter linkage worked.

The mechanical aspect is identical to a 700r4, as a 4l65e is basically a 700r4 with electronic control. I used a one piece ds out of an 85 c10 swb when i swapped a 700r4 into my 72 c10 swb

You will need to invest in a stand alone controller to get the 4l65e to work. Do hou already have the trans? Imo you might look into selling it and buying a 700r4. You will probably make some $ in the process.

if I was going to stay with a mechanical transmission, I'd use the 2004r in the garage back home, but... I'm looking into an engine swap(atlas I6) and need to start setting up a budget.

You have a LS9, The Corvette ZR1 LS9? A 4L65E will not stand up to that engine long term, Your into Built 4L80E territory!

Use the 2004R, The cost of a 4L65E installed more than out weighs any mechanical tuning that the 2004R will require.

not going in alone. I'd be swapping in an Atlas 4.2 I6 (vortec 4200) as well.

Buy an entire package, 4L60E, PCM, TCM & all. A 4L60E is easily upgraded beyond a 4L65E.

I have pondered many engine and trans swaps myself and I have concluded that you will not know your driveshaft length or crossmember modification requirements until you get this stuff bolted in. I can tell you that the easiest route would be to have pacific fabrication make you an engine crossmember. You may end up sliding the engine closer to the front which could change your driveshaft length. I was looking into a 8100/4l80 setup for my truck and I did find out that the 4L80 is 2in. longer than a th350. Not sure if the 4L65 carries the same dimensions or if you are running a TH350 right now. Anyway slide the engine forward 2 inches bolt in longer trans and you can keep your driveshaft and trans crossmember. This is just theory, I have not proven it.

How true that is! You can over-think most swaps until you either give up and stay with what you have or settle for something someone else has already worked out. Better to work from a plan that includes all of the driveline components you want, pick those up then work out the small stuff as it arises. It's also cheaper that way because you won't buy things that you do not need or just will not work with the driveline components you have. Separating the chassis from the cab and bed will make things easier.

well, because no-one makes swap mounts for the 4.2 engine, I thought I would start with the transmission and work my way forward, that way the engine is easier to line up and level in the engine bay when I go to make mounts.
