Re: 700 r4 transmission
What trans is in it now?
More parts are needed if you dont already have an auto,(cooler, trans lines) if you have a turbo 350, the yoke will work on the 700r4, if you have a 400, you will need a new yoke. 1.You will need to move the trans crossmember back for the 700R4 2.You will need need torque conv bolts (Metric) 3.You will need to figure out how the OD/Lockup circuit will work 4.You will need to fiigure out how your speedo will adapt (a lot of 700's are electric speedo's, you can change it over to manual, google PATC in Louisiana, they have all the parts) 5.You will have to change the shift linkage so you can manually engage all the gears (if you have auto now, the set up will work, but not for all gears) 6.Shift indicator for column, if you want it to look right. 7.I have just done two of these swaps.... 8.Drive shaft should be fine as long as your pinion angles are ok. Re: 700 r4 transmission
If buying used...early Turbo 700s, 1982-85 were trouble-prone. Not very beefy inside...MAJOR upgrade in '86 made them almost bulletproof.
Be sure you get one from an '86-up Chevy. |

Re: 700 r4 transmission
There were many changes to the 700R4 through the years including the first couple. The forward sprag was improved. The input -3/4 clutch line up changed. In 1986 had a larger input shaft and a couple more vanes in the pump. 1987 was the year hydromatic did the 700R4 upgrade. They added a forward accumulator circuit to soften the shift to drive. More vanes were added to the pump. Accumulator lineup changed slightly.
Unless your building 300hp + any 700$r can be built to be dependable and work well.

Re: 700 r4 transmission
I did this swap in 2002 on my 350 in my '71 GMC. Super easy.
Main points you need to remember. You want a later 700R4 - '86 or '87. Ideally, you want an early 90s (90,91,92 - I think) out of a Camaro, Trans Am. At this point, I'll assume they all need to be rebuilt. FYI - I had my done to the fullest extent in 2002. I put 100,000 hard miles on it and thought it was baked and was going to sell it as a core. Ended up testing in another car and it worked perfect - turned out my 350 needed the rebuild... 700-R4s are mechanical. in '93 they changed to 4L60s which are the same, but electric, I think you need a module to make the shift. Torque converters are not made equally. Research it do death, or you'll hate it. TV cable adjustment is very important AND super easy - yet many screw it up. Finally, don't let people tell you these transmission are not tough. They are, you just need to do it right. My shop has guys running 9s all day on 700-R4, I have put one behind a 526 cid in a 4600lb car and it does fine too. I also reco 3:73 gears. Great fun. Great milage. There are loads and loads of tech articles out there. Google will be your best friend. It's a great swap. Enjoy. bovey |

Re: 700 r4 transmission
TV cable adjustment was mentioned but you will need the cable and brackets to attach to the carb. Lokar makes a nice one with brackets.

Re: 700 r4 transmission
Google trushift transmission bracket. It will lead to Bowler trans.in Lawrenceville, Illinois. Everything you need as far as brackets and TV cable. $229.00.
