Starter motor on a 66 i6 250 - how easy to recon?
Hi folks was just wondering if anyone can help me out please.
The starter/solenoid is sticky in my truck and I have to persuade it every now and then with a few taps! I'm wanting to pull it out and give it a once-over myself and see if I can clean it all up and hopefully remedy the issue as its fine apart from the odd sticky moment. Is there anything I should watch out for? Any hidden parts that will fly out once I pull the case off? Is it a pretty easy job to do if you have some mechanical knowledge? Thanks in advance.

Disconnect the battery!
It's the same looking starter housing as the V8. Some early ones bolted from the front and back, the later one's bolted up from the bottom just like the V8's. No big deal. Remember to support the truck with jack stands, no concrete blocks and disconnect the battery as the wires down there are HOT at all times. |

If they are stiff/cranky its often worn out bushings front and rear for the armature shaft. I'm not sure if you can get rebuild kits for em. Given the price for a reman and using the varous coupon codes for discount and free shipping, I prolly wouldn't even bother, just swap in a new and keep the occasionally cranky starter as a back up.

i have used these, Victory Lap GMS-01 Starter Repair Kit :... good quality stuff. make sure to get the solenoid also.
