What did you say that address was..... HAHAHA If I was in the market for one and it is as nice as you make it sound, I would expect to pay 5,000.

Re: Found a truck, having a tough time with the value
The guy inherited it through from his father in law, it's never been for sale but has never been driven either. I talked to him for sometime hoping to get a ballpark figure. He says he doesn't know what it's worth but. I was gonna throw out 5000, I think that's a fair price, the engine may or may not be work, and the rest of the drive train could be good but who knows. All I know is it's a rust free cab and it's never had any body work or paint.
He did say that for the right price he'd consider it. I'm just wondering if the family talk and Barrett Jackson has got him thinking 10,000 or more. In which my 5000 would come off as an insult. |

Re: Found a truck, having a tough time with the value
I wouldn't think $5,000 would be insulting. Although, rust free trucks are probably hard to come by in your area...I know longbed's in here in Arizona aren't worth much.
Also keep in mind, he inherited it...he has nothing invested in it compared to the guy with $9,000 worth of receipts. More importantly, do research on the comparable trucks in your area to help give you a range of it's true market value. You don't want to get it home and later learn that you overpaid for it.

All you can do is try an offer and see what happens, info examples help as mentioned though. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Re: Found a truck, having a tough time with the value
All good advice. Around here, trucks go higher then in other states, but a longbed isn't real high on the list. I'd say $4000-$5000max.

Re: Found a truck, having a tough time with the value
The Goater's Right, my buddy here in Arizona just sold his nicely restored 69 long bed for $3500.00.
I paid $4000.00 for my 68 SWB GMC because I knew the original owners, local truck, never left Arizona When buying an Old Truck "Value" is relative to What Factors mean anything to YOU and whether the Seller actually thinks he's selling Gold Bullion or just another Old Truck. Ramblings of an Old Fart, Pre-Coffee.

Re: Found a truck, having a tough time with the value
an older, smarter fellow once told me.... when he goes to buy something he tells the seller
"this is your truck, i never try to put a value on your belongings, i will let you do that" you never know... they may throw out a lower price than you are expecting.. and you are in a better position to negotiate.

Re: Found a truck, having a tough time with the value
I just paid $4900 for a '70 longbed CST with chrome everywhere, flawless interior, 118,000 miles. Very minor body damage and rusty rockers. It has the original paint in great shape (hugger orange between white). I feel it's a fair price even with a noisy valve tappet. I am paying for originality and I plan to keep it as original as possible--even the on-the-cab airhorns and marker lights.
So $5K is probably reasonable--a lower price would also be reasonable. Not much higher though. Photos welcome. |

You know, that's actually really good advice. If you've ever watched Pawn Stars, that's how those guys at the pawn shop try to get as much as possible. It's a starting point, and if the seller doesn't know what they've got and they throw a low number out, you win. If their number is too high, you can haggle. If they won't come down, just walk |

Re: Found a truck, having a tough time with the value
If you don't even know that it runs, I would NOT start by offering 5k. It is a simple, reasonable question from a buyer. If the answer is not known, use it to your advantage.

Listen to cdowns - start low. You won't offend anyone except yourself when you realize you paid too much.
