Post License Plate Restore

Maybe a dumb question..does anybody do replacement license plates? Might not even be legal, but i thought i would ask. Mine are terrible; faded, slightly bent etc. Now that i got my truck painted, my 30 yr old Kali plates look awful. Thanks

Have you tried contacting the DMV to see if they will issue you an new plate? They may charge you a little and you'll have a new plate number.

In CA the DMV will not re issue old style plates. The will issue you the current style plates. I could be wrong, but I think you are not supposed to restore the plates, but turn them in for new one. Most cops will look the other way on that one. Unless you give them lip.
Next Long Beach swap meet is April 12th. The Pomona Swap Meet is April 26th.

I thought about just going to the DMV for new plates, but I want to stay with the "vintage" blue plates. I don't really care about the numbers. I doubt if you could get any of the blue ones from the Kalifornicate DMV. They want to crush all our trucks anyway.

You can do it yourself. It's not hard to do, just time consuming. I'm doing a set right now for a guy's truck. Go for it, when you finish they really set your ride off!

Thanks for all the replies. I like the suggestion for the Pomona Swap Meet best; great excuse to go. I think they have those about every month don't they? Hey Smitty; what can i say? I envy your black plates, but with a few exceptions they quit makin em in 69. Us guys with those "late model" trucks are outa luck. Jimmy

A lot of the black background and yellow letter/numbers plates have the 1963 stamped on them. But they were not made in '63.
The CA plates started switching to blue background with yellow number/letters in '69. In 83/84 they started to issue the reflective white background with blue numbers/letters, but mainly on passenger cars. Pickup trucks have commercial plates, not sure about Suburbans, and had a few more years of blue background with yellow numbers/letters.

Actually, it was '72 that they switched to the blue/yellow numbered plates. The years get confusing, don't they?

If you go to the DMV website, they lay out a history of the changes. 70 was the last year black/gold plates were issued, which would explain why so many ended up on 71's that were bought at the end of 1970.
They do say that in 83 they switched to the sun background (remember "LA Law" )...but we bought an 86 Bronco in 1986 that had, and still has blue/gold plates. If the website is correct, then I am guessing someone transferred them from an older vehicle before it was sold to us? Only thing I can come up with.

Re: License Plate Restore

I had to make a new plate one time. Years ago, there was this UHP trooper around here that just hated me. I never knew why, but he would pull me over every single time he saw me. I had an old '67 Trazer. This once, he pulled me over and when he came up to the window first thing out of his pie-hole was "Where's your front licence plate?"

"It's right there on my front bumper."

He walked back to the front of my truck and I could just see the red rising up his face. "Where the hell is your front bumper?" He was really hollering by then.

"How would I know-it fell off years ago"

Sure enough, I got a ticket for no plate and no front bumper. So I read the law and got the barest minimum of a chunk of metal for a bumper, then I took my rear plate and made a little form and put the plate in it and poured some concrete on it. After it cured for a couple days, I took an old plate and pounded it out flat then carefully hammered it into the mold. Utah's plates at the time were just a basic white with black digits so it was easy to get close. Then off to see the Judge. We still had a Justice of the Peace back then, and his day job was owning the local laundermat. Laundermat Court was quite a tradition in our town. He was the kinda Judge that if you got to BSing with him and took him cash money, most times tickets wouldn't really show up on our records. Well, since all I had was basicly a fix-it ticket, and the windows of the laundermat were kind of fogged up, 'ol Reed just gave my truck a quick look out the window, saw my bumper and plate and said "Ten bucks". Good enough.

I've found this guy that does tag restoration. Even tags that are bent/damaged beyond belief can be repaired. Check him out, he does some fantastic work (well, him and another fella he knows)

Re: License Plate Restore

This thread is timely. I got a few minutes yesterday and pulled my old 72 Texas Farm Truck license plates off my beater. I'm in the middle of powdercoating them this weekend. Green letters, white background, and a coat of clear powder on top of all of it. Should be durable.

Re: License Plate Restore

That's a good idea. I have a buncha old AR plates, and a few of them are truck plates. In Arkansas, truck plates ran from July 1 of the issue year, until June 30 of the following year. In '68, Arkansas started producing "permanent" plates that had three letters/three numbers and no specific year. So, my '69 truck can't get a specific year Arkansas plate....hence the Arizona plate that I had in AZ in '69-71.
