10'' rims
Cant remember if I have asked but
Is it a given that if I run some 10'' wheels on my truck that the frame is going to split where the steering box mounts against the frame? Not going to run them long.A few months at the longest. I dont want to hurt or weld on it any.Or can I put some flat washers against the frame to keep it from splitting? Thanks guys. |

ive had mine on for a year or 2 and everything's fine. I didn't know that was a possibility?

My son's 87 split at the steering box. The guy at frame shop said that he has fixed alot because of the wide wheels and the frame is thin.
That was the reason I asked. I have seen where the 4X4 split at the box and saw where the people said they broke away from the frame. Thanks |

I think one tons came from the factory with braces that run from the crossmember to the frame rails. I would look through the salvage yards for a pair of them if you have any concerns.

There are reinforcement brackets of various styles available to strengthen and or repair the area where the steering gear bolts on. It's because of the added stress in the steering area in extreme conditions like hard cornering or off road. It can happen to stock trucks used heavily not just those with bigger tires or more grip.

The frames were cracking behind the steering boxes back when these trucks were new, but back then it was only on 4x4 trucks with big lifts and tires. The steering box braces have been around as long as I can remember. 10" wide wheels are not necessarily the kiss of death. It helps to keep in mind that these trucks have extremely over-boosted power steering and just because you can go lock to lock sitting still with one finger doesn't mean you should show all your friends. Cranking on the steering wheel sitting still can be worse than wheel/tire width.
