Inline 6 250 4spd starter question 2part question

noticed on my solenoid there are two locations to hook up small wires, and one for the battery. I'm pretty sure the yellow wire on the left should be hooked up. Although it seems to work ok w/o it. what does it do?

Took my starter out and the starter gear where it engages with the fly wheel. spins freely. should this spin like this, or is it broken?

As far as the two little terminals. The purple wire goes to the one labeled "S". The yellow wire goes to the other one. If you have points ignition the yellow wire needs to be hooked up. If you have HEI ignition the yellow wire doesn't need to be hooked up.

I agree with Tex on the wires. The gear should turn in one direction only. If it spins freely in both directions it is completely shot. If it turns freely in one direction it is probably about to go out. Normally it has a drag in the one direction & wont turn in the other direction without turning the armature. If the starter spins sometimes without turning the engine it needs a new drive.

If it needs a new drive, you can get one at the parts store. No reason to turn your working starter in on a junky rebuild that the parts guy is surely gonna try and pawn off on you. Drives are cheap and easy to replace.

Yes. Ask for a starter drive. I usually look them up at the parts store website and have my own part number. Saves having to trust the counterman.

Accel sells a US-made Starter Solenoid, that is an exact replacement.
