I'm wanting to shave the bolt heads on my front bumper and have it chrome plated. How perfect does the metal have to be before sent for plating?

the better you have it prepped the better your price at least for the person I used.

It must be perfect. The chrome process uses very thin layers of materials. It will show almost any imperfections. Do yourself a favor and confer with the plater before you start. They will be the best source of advice.

Get a price before you start. The cost of chrome work nowadays takes a lot of motivation out of a project like this. It wouldn't surprise me a single bit if they quote you 500 dollars to chrome your bumper.

$500 actually doesn't sound bad considering the quality of repop bumpers

I kind of shot from the hip there. I know that I paid 350 each back in 2000 for my Blazer bumpers.

I had searched info about this not too long ago. A few of the places said they'd rather do the welding than fix your welds. They said it would probably cost less to have them do it.

If you have a company that remanufactures bumpers, give them a shot. If you don't have to have it the next day, the price may be somewhat reasonable.

Back in 1985 I had my drive shalf on a 57 Chevy done for $50.00 in Nashville,Tn. But then they got on the chromers and made them do so much more to protect the air, ground (I don't know) but then the price went out of site. The cost was passed on the the customer and can not blame the ones doing the chrome jobs but you know who to blame. I guess it was a good thing, just do not know. Now you can not get much done for the same $50.00. MO

Here is 50 dollars worth of chroming. A shift lever on one of my recent restorations.

I hate government intruding into business, but in the case of chrome shops, they needed to. A byproduct of chrome plating is something called hexavalent chromium. Its bad stuff. Coincidentally, its the same thing that Julia Roberts movie called "Erin Bronkovich" was based on. Around here, you had chrome shops dumping it anywhere they could get away with, ditches, lakes, abandoned barrels beside the road, you name it.

quoted 175 per on 76 headlight bezels. Found some NICE ones in AZ from a board member for WAY less. I get the waste abuse and that's some bad stuff. You would think we could come up with a different process or sumthin....Maybe they have, powder coating....
