Bed liner on the floor boards?

Hey everyone, my 85's interior carpet is absolutely disgusting, and i was thinking that if i ripped it all out and put bed liner on the floor that it would look good and be more durable than new carpet. Anyone ever done this or have any advice to give me for relatively inexpensive flooring options?

I have seen it in Jeeps, and I plan to do it to my truck when it's time.

I am going to use raptor liner, and heavy rubber floor mats to protect it.

I had my 76 Rhino Linered and did not like the result.

With the insulation removed from the transmission tunnel the floor got very hot.

When the floor was wet (like getting in the truck during the rain) my feet would slip around on the floor near the accelerator/brake pedals.

The Rhino Liner wore down where I got in and out of the truck on the floor (no longer cottage cheese surface but a slick surface).

Rhino Liner will also show stains. I had some cleaning fluid fall out of a bucket I had back in the bed and it left a yellow/green stain which I could not remove. So, it is not impervious to all chemicals.

On my current 83, I had a local upholstery shop install carpet, then I covered the carpet over the hump and the exposed carpet under the seat sides with treadmill mat (about $20 at Walmart) and covered that with Husky Liners. If I were to do it again I would probably go with the factory rubber floor liner and cover that with Husky Liners. You could get a Husky Liner in one piece to cover the hump in that past, but I don't know if it is available for old squares.

I tried it. Didn't like it. Bought a black carpet kit, insulation and dyna matted the whole cab. Best decision I've made yet!

I did the insulation and mat kit on my 76 for about 150 if I remember correctly

Mine has a do it yourself bed liner.

It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter and noisy as hell. I don't mind any of those things however.

My truck is built for camping and wheeling. So I'm always getting in while wet and muddy.

Carpet holds moisture and will eventually spell the demise of your floor. I wish I had a picture of my old cab. Even if you think your carpet is dry it probably is not!


It all depends on what you want to do with your truck.

It all depends on what you want to do with your truck.

You bring up a few good points! I'm offroad all the time in my truck. I spent a lot of money on my carpet and I'm glad I did, being that it's my daily driver. I chose to invest in some good mud mats to trap all the crap before it gets to my floor. So keep in mind, if you go with carpet you may have to shell out a little more money to protect it and your floors.

About $20 duplicolor bed armour. I bought a case of this stud and used it on my inner fenders and core support. I can vary the texture which is nice just with length and speed of spray. I also did the dashpad.

That raises a good possibility. Spray liner the floor(and up the sides, kickpanels, back wall - as I did in my 76), then add insulation, carpeting, and Huskyliners. Kind of a belt and suspenders approach, but probably the best way to go - just some more added $$$.

What did you use to seal the cracks on the dash? I may have to try this.

I seal the floor with a rust paint.
at first I didn't like the 78s rubber carpet ,
but now I know the easy clean up with the rubber.
i removed and pressure washed my 79s fuzzy carpet to clean it,
but with mud or sloppy snow that rubber carpet is win win

Bedliner and hush mat.
Without door panels or carpet can hold a normal conversation @3500 rpm hi way speed.
With dual 3" exhaust and rowdy small block.
I'm sold.

I used raptor liner on the floors of my K5. It layed out good, but will end up with sound deaden-er and carpet on it later.

I went round and round with this myself recently. I finally decided to go DIY depot sound deadener with black carpet kit. Flipped some extra for the mass backing. Deadener is in, the carpets are still in garage floor though. I did spray back cab wall behind my seat including the pockets. In the end a quieter ride won out, and it would be hard to stain black carpet.
