Gear ratio ?

My 68 stepside has a 350 tranny. The rear end way to low for me. This truck could have been a 3 speed a few years back. Tacking about 3000 rpm's at about 60-65. My question is, Whats the ideal gear ratio I'm looking for ? The other question is, For a rear end change out (Simplest) what years am I looking for. I don't want to be cutting or welding mounts or perches ? Would I be better off having the ring & pinion Changed ?

If the truck was originally a 3 speed OTT,it's probably equipped with q 3:73 gearset.For the auto,factory would have been a 3:08.Tires will make some difference and if the tranny's speedo output wasn't changed,your speedo is off.The easiest rear end swap is a 67-72 rear from a truck equipped with the gearing you want and sprung the way yours is.The later 71-72(and some 70 midyear up) rears are a little wider to match better with the disc brake front end.They mount the same.Tires can make a lot of difference but due to a computer crash I don't have a calculator but they are available on lots of tire and 4X4 sites.
My best advice on options is to either put in 3:08 gears and have stock rpms at a given speed or install an AOD tranny and get the best of both worlds.

Tire size is 285/50/18 about 28.5 Tall.
