Carpet replacement question.

I will be looking at buying some new carpet shortly and have a few questions. First of all I am thinking about using some dynamat or something similar for the base. Can you buy new carpet padding or does it come with the new carpet. Second, are you guys even putting the padding back in when new carpet goes in or not.

The reason I ask is that I took the carpet out of my 85 K30 and found the rust underneath. I threw the padding away that was on the floor pans because it was soaked. I kept the padding that is under the seat. So I am wondering if I even need to replace the pad or just put the carpet on the dynamat. What has everyone been doing when it comes to this. If you don't put the pad down then is the carpet still fitting fine?

Also what is the factory pile type and what kind does everyone seem to go with. Has anyone bought Trim Parts brand through Summit? Any reviews on them?

I bought my carpet through Brothers Truck Parts....fit was good....I prepped the floor by wairebrushing loose dirt, etc. wasn't really any rust but I dug out the old seam sealer in the kicks, applied new sealer, then I painted the floor a satin black, then sprayed some 3M headliner/carpet adhesive over the whole floor and cut 1/2" synthetic insulation backing to cover the entire cab floor evenly, then layed new carpet in place. I also cut my own insulation panels for behind the door panels also....really cuts down on exterior noise, too.

I bought the carpet and kick panels for my 79 F350 from these guys. It was ACC carpet...everywhere I looked, it was the same manufacturer...but these guys had the BEST prices.

Interested here as well, I just replaced my upholstery and will need to get carpet soon (truck fund is depleted until after Christmas)..

I pulled the tag off the carpet and the color number is 1250 and indicates charcoal. But when I look at carpet from different vendors this number does not jive with the number they have for charcoal. I assume they have there own numbers and don't carry on the factory number.

Years ago I used to be a parts manager at a chevy dealer. I sure wish I could remember the number and code. The dealer had a number you could call to be able to call in and get availability, pricing on part numbers I punched in the phone. I would like to be able to do that still as I come across different numbers while tearing into these trucks of mine.

make sure you find out where the leak is first and fix that , otherwise you are in for trouble

Picked up my carpet kit from Brothers also, as well as the padding and rubber sound pad

Dynomat will cut down on sound, but the carpet padding is still important. I would venture a guess that carpet/dynomat (no padding) would be louder than carpet/padding.

Just got done doing my crew. I went with stockinterior molded carpet with the extra mass backing. Did the repairs, wire wheeled, rustoleum primer, DIY peel and seal from Home Depot, then I put a layer of sound Deadener for hardwood flooring, then my carpet kit. I would recommend doing it in the summer. Or pre heat with a torpedo style heater. It came out looking good. I would recommend cutting your bolt holes with every layer to avoid hours under your rig with a soldering iron trying to find them. Yep.

Bojak, Are you happy with the results of your carpet/sound deadener install? How quiet is it now? I've been thinking of using a very similar meathod in my crew cab.

Yes it turned out great. I really think if you hung it up like a rug and shot a torpedo style heater at it (from a safe distance ) it would lay down even nicer but a heat gun does fine. It took 6 rolls of the peel and stick (flashing) Deadener, and part of one roll of heat sheald. It is much quieter than before. It's not new car good but compared to where it was at I couldn't be happier. I did replace door gaskets at the same time so lost a lot of noise there as well. I do still need all new window gaskets and seals, it seems like whatever problem you eliminate the ones still there seem to magnify. I can have a normal conversation going down the road now which was not the case before. I kept going back and forth on carpet or rubber and the extra noise insulation is what finally made me decide on carpet. It's black so it doesn't stain if you clean it up as you go. I am putting husky mats in it too so in my mind best of all worlds.

i also used Stcokinteriors.com and it was a great product and they had a great price on it....i also ordered mine with the mass backing.....i dont have padding cause mine was literally in pieces.....it does have some Dynomat under it around the trans tunnel and over exhaust......truck is alot quieter and fresh carpet just makes your truck feel alot nicer

I also used stockinteriors in my old 79' wood hauler. Very pleased with quality, easy to work with, turned out great and had more than enough material on all sides to trim adequately. I also went with the heavy duty padding underneath. Made a huge difference in road noise. Will definitely use them when my crew cab needs carpet.

Another vote for stock interiors. I used the loop style carpet in my old '74, and will do the same for my '74 crew. You can call them and get samples; I would suggest this and also suggest getting the mass backing as well. The mass backing makes the carpet very similar to OEM. Mine was an ACC carpet when it showed up, if that helps any.
