Newb doing a LS3/6L80 twin turbo swap K5
Been a lurker here for a while now, thought some of you may be interested in my latest project swap:1970 K5 blazer 4x4 that I picked up earlier this year.I bought the truck out of Baja Ca. original paint zero rust couldn't pass it up so last Friday I pulled the carb'd 383 and TH350 trans out and started my swap here are the plans:
I have a L92/LS3 that I got from a friend for a song and dance, and a donated 6L80E out of a 2007 Escalade.Decided that wasn't enough so I also scrounged together a set of used Grand National turbos that I will be running as well. It will be kept 4x4 using a NV241 T-case with a pass front diff drop,I have also ordered the Dirty Dingo complete front replacement cross member and mount kit for the swap, should be here today. I was able to get the aluminum radiator Precision turbo a/a inter cooler and the dual 4th gen fans mounted as an assembly this past Saturday and my intentions are to have the motor in and turbo fab started by the beginning of the weekend. Here are the pics so far: |

Re: Newb doing a LS3/6L80 twin turbo swap K5
made some progress, motor and trans are in,working out the Escalade T-case to be clocked differently for the pass front diff in the blazer.Looks like I can rotate it to be 180 degrees off from factory,Ill have to plug the vent tube, make a new pick-up for the internal pump then drill and tap for a new vent tube and weld a bung on it for the proper fill hole height and level,But it will be bad dog full time AWD!Should have the harness by the end of the week, fuel system is coming together using a 1991 Bronco II tank, fits perfectly btw.By the end of the coming weekend it should be nearly ready to run and turbo fab will begin.I have a few pics that I took I will upload later today

Re: Newb doing a LS3/6L80 twin turbo swap K5 MORE PICS!!
Made some progress..turns out the Escalade T-case doesnt have an internal pump in it,so I was able to just plug the existing vent tube and make a new fill/drain plug location and a new vent. The adapter took slight modification with a die grinder to orient the T-case where I wanted it,no big deal, bolted right up and worked perfectly The original trans mount/cross member was used and almost seemed like it was made for the swap,I had to drill 4 new holes in the frame for mounting position and make a stand off for the differance in height between the original and the new mount on the 6L80 very simple. The bronco II fuel tank fits perfectly and was mounted using the original straps rotated 90 degrees with a piece of uni-strut bolted to the frame in the front and 2 new holes drilled at the rear frame cross member and bolted through. The fuel system will be done by this weekend via a small sump at the rear of the tank with 2 externally mounted walboro 255 pumps wyed together. And finally I wwent with the Holley High Ram EFI intake to fill up the engine bay a bit...turbo fab starts soon

Re: Newb doing a LS3/6L80 twin turbo swap K5
thanks,I actually know exactly what that feels like,I have a 402ci LS twin turbo 1992 GMC typhoon as well as this. That build was a bit more over the top tho...still AWD,power steering converted from a box to a rack and pinion,A/C,full interior and about as street-able as the day it rolled off the assembly line...did I mention that it makes 799whp on 93 octane, and 983 on 110???its a good time

Re: Newb doing a LS3/6L80 twin turbo swap K5
great build... giving me bad ideas =)
if you are making it all wheel drive, how are you dealing with the front differential so its drivable around town... im not sure if the front wheels have lockers to engage as well... thanks

Re: Newb doing a LS3/6L80 twin turbo swap K5
the front diff is an open style carrier and the t-case uses a viscous coupler and a planetary set so it doesnt have a solid or direct coupler between the front and rear drive wheels,it allows for slip and it is split 40/60 front/rear.It will drive like an 07 awd escalade, not like an antique 4x4 where the wheels are locked together front and rear when the 4x4 is engaged

Re: Newb doing a LS3/6L80 twin turbo swap K5
wonder lake huh? your just down the road from me maybe 20 mins- half hour, might have to meet up someday and check this bad boy out. i like the use of the 6l80, little bit different than the commons th350/700r4/4l80 trans everyone uses, and the use of the escalade t-case is awesome as well, most guys are swapping these into 2wd trucks, which is laaaaame!! haha i have no room to talk, my truck is 2wd... but anyways, sweet build. what is your final hp goal? subscribed btw

Re: Newb doing a LS3/6L80 twin turbo swap K5
How are you adapting the control for the transfer case? I would imagine it is electric rather than a stick like the 205.

Re: Newb doing a LS3/6L80 twin turbo swap K5
That is cool, I want to do the LS conversion in the future and figured I would adapt a 4l60 or 80 and just use adapt my np205. This seems like a viable alternative especially if it is full time AWD. Did you consider moving the engine forward at all instead of moving the trans cross member? I know others move the engine forward to adapt the 700r4 but I would imagine the 6l80 is much longer.
