Muncie+buckets+console= issues??
I'm in the process of trying to buy a console for my 68 with bucket seat and a 4 speed Muncie. And I wanted to know if there are any clearance issues, with the shifter and the console? I'm new to the these trucks so im not sure if they even came with that combination stock. Since I don't have one now I don't know the measurements. Thanks for your help!
I'm posting a picture of a console that I saw in this forum. That is the style I'm going for. |

Re: Muncie+buckets+console= issues??
I may be alone here..
But I was always disappointed with the console they designed for these trucks. They look a little plain. Anyone ever put a 68-69 Camaro console in their 67-72 truck? The Camaro console itself just sits on the hump, doesn't have any complicated contours like the 68-72 A bodies console. And there's enough room for it to sit between the buckets. And apparently they sell the bolt in boots for 4 speeds and automatic aftermarket shifters, and I believe the 68 Camaro woodgrain is a match for the 72 woodgrain in the trucks. (Bottom two pics) I don't have a four speed in my current truck, but it's something I always wanted to try. I just wondered what the clearance would be like between the shifter and gas tank. J.

Tony;
If that shifter is in neutral in you pic, it looks like it will interfere. Good news is, Hurst sells a ton of different levers to solve that problem. They have alot of lengths and different curvatures. It should be a relatively easy fix. Check Jegs and Summit to see your options. |

Re: Muncie+buckets+console= issues??
Tony,
Just going off your picture and what Ive seen as far as trucks with those consoles.. Im 95% sure you will have clearance issues. I have the stock 4 speed in my truck and the hole in the floor is much furthur forward than yours. I have a bench seat with a cheap cup holder in the middle and I come real close to hitting the cup holder when switching gears. Like Tom said you might be able to get away with a different hurst lever, or even making a custom lever which wouldnt be hard with the way the hurst lever attaches. But your probably not going to know without trying it yourself unfortunatly. Maybe your can find an old beat up console or get the dimensions from someone to try it out first. BTW... What seats are your running in your truck? Those look nice.

Re: Muncie+buckets+console= issues??
lol. Thats funny, I just met with another board member for lunch and we got on the topic of seats and he said the Ford Fusion seats are really nice. I might just have to look into a pair of those, and I agree about the the head rest, but they do look really nice.
Run into in unusual problems installing them? Sorry, I dont mean to high jack your thread. Just like your seats...lol

Re: Muncie+buckets+console= issues??
There is no comparing a factory 4spd with a car 4spd shifter location. First of all,the factory 4spd location clears everything because it was made to go there. These are top-loaders,which means the shifter is located directly on top of the transmission. The truck 4spd shifting has a much longer throw.
There is a truck shifter made that will work. 55-57 Chevy car bench seat shifters were what we used to use.

Re: Muncie+buckets+console= issues??
Another thing to consider is shifter location. The shifter in your borrowed pic is a three speed. The four speed shifter for a muncie sits about 3 inches further back.

Re: Muncie+buckets+console= issues??
It's not a borrowed pic, it's my actual truck. So you are saying I have a 3 speed car shifter installed instead of the truck 4 speed??BTW it's a M-22 trans out of a 69 chevelle

Thought the borrowed pic was the first one, not the console. Get a hurst bench seat shifter and then find a console to fit or make one. http://www.summitracing.com/int/part...8620/overview/ |

Re: Muncie+buckets+console= issues??
Looks to me like your shifter is in the same spot where my Saginaw came through the floor. My sbc is mounted in the L-6 mounts, so everything is a bit further back than normal, but the shifter location looks pretty close to yours.
In my case, I have the bench seat, but even using the 55-57 Chevy bench seat shifter, I was hitting the seat before I could get 2nd and 4th. I cut and modified the shift handle to move it forward about 4" and up about 2", and it would just clear with the seat all the way back. From photos I have seen, the console sits pretty close to where the front of the bench seat sits, so I think you will have the same issues. You can overcome it with handle mods, just be prepared to do some fabricating.

Re: Muncie+buckets+console= issues??
Tony. If you proceed with the camaro console i sure would like to see pictures. I think it would really spice up the interrior if it fit's. Good luck with your truck.

Re: Muncie+buckets+console= issues??
I am planning the same install. I just installed the linkage last week (and have none of the interior in yet) But----- I too believe you will have shifter interference. The good news is---you can get the hurst linkage for the 55-57 chevy Bench seat and it should clear. It has a definite forward bend to it. I have a longer straighter linkage than yours and I believe Ill have to change as well. (Im counting on the 55-57 linkage working with the console you pictured.)

Re: Muncie+buckets+console= issues??
A stock console would most definitely hit when u go to grab 2nd or 4th. I have a picture of the buckets and console in my 72 GMC I will post for you later today
