hood rubber and latch questions
Putting some parts together today and ran into some snags before the power went out, hoping you guys can help...
On my hood latch, the spring that winds around the hooks main hing pin is broke...dont even see the whole latch assembly new...does anyone know a fix for this? Some kind of replacement pin and spring? Radiator to hood seal is like bent 45 degrees...does it angle down towards the radiatior or up which lays along the hood brace, away from the radiator? In the hood rubber set there are two long pieces that go under the bolt in braces. Then another long one and three short ones that i dont know ehere they go? Guessing under the front or rear bracing somewhere? I know where the 4 rubber pads go (2 rivet and 2 screw in)...what about the push in rubber button ones? Sorry for so many questions, many of these things were missing on my truck and i havent found pics to show me where they go.

Re: hood rubber and latch questions
Found a workable pin for the hinge and made a spring from a coat hanger that looks like it will work decently well and look ok! Still confused on the rubber questions though.

Re: hood rubber and latch questions
I have an original hood in the shed. I'll go take pics tomorrow.
Did you have everything media blasted?

Re: hood rubber and latch questions
I did media blast the rear pad brackets, and the removable braces, and took the hinge apart and made some springs, etc, but the rest of the hood was a lot of DA work. (see my sig thread for more)
Appreciate the pics!

Re: hood rubber and latch questions
The hood looks great! You do very nice work.
It's funny, I'm planning to do the exact same thing you're doing in the next few weeks. I've already pulled the braces off and blasted and the next step is the DA work. Question: What are you planning to do on the finish of the hood hinges and springs? The factory did zinc phosphate back in the day, and it's hard to find anybody who does that stuff anymore. The ones that do charge pretty steep. I was quoted $150 to do the pair of hinges and springs, and I think I can do it myself for a lot cheaper with one of the home kits.

Re: hood rubber and latch questions
As promised and I can take more pics if you need. The second photo is from a hood I sold. The first is from a 1963 hood I own.

Re: hood rubber and latch questions
Thanks for the pic! So the rubber seems to fold up towards the top of the hood, that helps a ton.
Chevyresto: i did it the cheap and easy way and left the springs and hinges on the inner fenders and painted them with the same semi gloss single stage centari as the underhood...i never really tthought about it. Now that you mentioned it i should do them right. One thing i can tell you, once you get them coated, give them two medium to wet coats of rustoleum clear. I do that to break boosters, fuel pumps, alternators, etc and it adds some shine and keeps the finish from dulling or powdering for a long time.

Re: hood rubber and latch questions
Chevyrestoguy: I had thought you meant zinc plating like below (that typical gold color on boosters etc.) I didn't realize zinc phosphate was black til i googled it. If they just looked black from the factory i'll probably leave the black paint on them.

Palmetto Industries sells the products to do both Zinc and Manganese. You have to use a camp stove or a burner to keep the solution around 185 degrees. Drop the parts in, and the solution etches the parts. In the gun world, they call this process Parkerizing.

Re: hood rubber and latch questions
OK i used some hardware store stuff to rebuild the hinge, after blasting it, taking it apart and painting it. I made the main spring that goes over the hinge pin from coat hangar (see my build thread, page 11 i think) in the vice. It works well! The one spring i have pictured, i don't think it goes there, think PO put it there when main spring broke? Also, after pics taken, shortened safety hook return spring to make it tighter just in case. Used marine wheel bearing grease on moving parts and inside latch hole. It's not as slick as the OEM setup (with a stepped mushroomed pin), i had to drill the hole in the safety hook to 5/16, BUT i can take mine a part if i want to make a nicer looking spring or find one. It is NICE and tight now, and kind of looks OEM. Also, who is going to be at a show looking at my hood latch? Who cares what that guy thinks?
On the rubber, i am clear where the two pieces go under the removable braces, but not so sure on the other pieces in red...maybe not for 66? two could go under the back hood brace, there was gunk like rubber in there before? Pic shows them up front?! Can't find holes in the hood for the round bumpers, only 4 drain holes on the front? Also may be not for 66?! So confused!

Re: hood rubber and latch questions
That one that i suspect doesn't go there, it isn't needed, home made spring returns that latch very firmly, i will probably remove it after verifying.

Re: hood rubber and latch questions
Yes there should be a piece of the foam rubber there as well as at the front in a similar area. Then you should have the 2 adjustable bumpers at the rear of the hood, each side, and the 2 fixed bumpers at the front corners

Re: hood rubber and latch questions
So the two round bumpers, not for this year? Have the adjustable ones on (riveted to brackets) and know where front screwed ones go, but the third long and smaller peices in lmc cstalot pic confuse me.

Re: hood rubber and latch questions
Bringing up an old thread as I am fixing to do this project this weekend. In post 1 there is a question about the 60-66 hood kit having three long pieces of rubber. From what I can find, the 60-61 hoods take 3 long pieces and the 62-66 hoods take 2. My kit came with 3 also.
I'll get some good pics of the placement on all the parts when I do the install.
