leg room

I have a 72 short bed, anyone know if I will gain more leg room if I move gas tank to rear of the frame instead of behind the seat?

I havent done this so Im not positive, but I have seen threads along these lines. What part of you seat back hits the cab first? Seems like its the top of the seat and there is still a little room between the seat back and the tank.

If your seat is all the way back and you have some room between the seat and cab
you might try to oblong the holes in the seat track mounts to move the seat back a little. Maybe also if you swap to different seats with a different back profile??

Stock seat the top of the seat will hit the back wall of the cab before it hits the tank. Mine has about 1/4" of clearance on the tank with the seat all the way back. So at least in my truck, removing the tank wouldn't help.

Thanks everyone for info. I sat in a couple of seats at Goodguys in Charlotte a couple of weeks ago. One was a '69, I had a lot more leg room and I rode in a '67 a few weeks ago, even more room. They had the tank under the bed, so I didn't know if that made such a difference. In both of them, the top of the seat rested on the cab, I have about 1.5 inches of space between mine.

Seems like your seat is not sliding all the way back...every one I've seen the seat back is against the cab when all the way to the rear.

You can adjust the steering column down almost 2" and drop the brake pedal too. Makes a lot more room. I'll see if I can dig up the threads...

Mine is all the way back and hitting the cab rear. I can stick my hand between the seat and tank.

As swap rat said to oval out the mount holes, but then you may be sitting at a 90degree angle. i did this to my old MG Midget and it helped a little, but there wasn't much room to go, so the work was almost moot.

I am 6'2 but my problem is I am under tall for my weight. I am the perfect weight for someone 9'7 but since I stopped growing before I stopped gaining,well you know. I pushed down the steering column I have not yet done the dropped brake pedal thing but I have changed trucks [at least in the line at the shop]. I am building three kinda all at once. Tilt columns will help a bunch and shorting them up helps that much more but when you shorten a tilt it takes some of the tilt effect away from you[some kind of lever thing I didn't pay attention in that class]but If you were to look at the home page in the upper left corner at the spot click on the tab that says tech tips it will take you to a wonderland of post that has all kinds of info on stuff like that. There are 6 pages of post but it only takes a few min to run through them to find what your looking for. Be forewarned that you might get sidetracked and find other great things to do to your truck in there that will make it a much more fun project or even just a truck. Jim

Someone on here moved the tank and flattened out the cab where the top of seat back hits (lotta work) to gain some room.

im 6'8" (plus i wear cowboy boots) and i have no issues. but my seat is pretty worn down so i kinda sink into it. my truck is actually the only rig in the family that i can fit in comfortably. love the worn out seat and love being able to reach the wheel without straight arming it with the seat all the way back.

You could also drop the seat brackets down. I did and I'm pretty happy with it.

The only way to get more leg room is by changing seat angle in the truck now, are redo the backside of the cab wall where the top of the seat hits now. Change out the factory seat with a aftermarket taking the tank out doesn't gain U anything by it's self.

Like the rest said, taking out the tank will not gain any addtional leg room. There are seats with thinner backs that will give more room as well as the things mentioned above.

Could always look at modding the factory bench to sit up straighter then make it go back farther. I have never tried it but I have read that there is a bolt that can be pulled to make the seat flip forward. If that is true it should be easy to make it stop more vertically which would probably gain you an inch or two.

I took some pictures for U to look at. My seat is a 89 Chevy 60/40. I mounted it myself and got as much leg room as I could without moding it. I'm 5'-8". Just so U know.
The seat is all the way back as far as it can go and it sit's right on the upper cab metal. The picture looking down the back of the seat and I can barely get my hand in between it and my speaker box.
The side shot is a little miss leading because of the angle, the speaker box is up against the back of the cab wall.
