Starter for 383
Hey guys... Question for the stroker dudes on here. What starter did you use on your 383 stroker? I have a dual drilled block to take either the straight or cross drilled starter, with the 168 tooth flexplate. Is there a gm application that works well? Or are the high torque after market better? Thanks.

Ive owned a couple 383 chevy motors , any standard starter is fine , the compact powermaster starters have allways worked well for me

Re: Starter for 383
I read somewhere a standard small block starter will have meshing issues with the 168 tooth flexplate.... Not true?

Thats because you are supposed to shim them. I never do, just drop the old one and put whatever shims are there back in. Shimming is done with a paper clip. Scientific aint it.

Re: Starter for 383
168 tooth flexplate is standard on all sb and bb. some early sb had 153 tooth flexplate. you will not have any problems.

Re: Starter for 383
So... after reading attatched post link.. I called NAPA. There are 2 mini starters available for the 96-98 vortec 350. (if I was to take that route) mini starter and mini gear drive. (for twice the price) Thoughts?

Re: Starter for 383
I used a Powermaster high torque mini starter, something like this. Just make sure you check the clearance.
