Fan shroud on a 4.1?
Has anyone installed a plastic fan shroud on a 1980 C10 4.1? I think the stock "shroud" is a little shelf above the radiator. One of the purposes of the shroud is to improve air flow through the radiator which the 6 cyl may not need, but it would be nice to have a bit more of a safety barrier as well. It also looks like the 5.0l eng has a plastic shroud and the same sized radiator so it may just mean that it needs a couple of brackets at the top. The shrouds themselves are pretty cheap. Any advice?

Not really sure what your asking? Should you use one? I vote yes, better cooling.

Ha, 250 I6 = 4.1 liters.
The shroud for a 292 or 250 is a single piece. They are still available. You can buy one from www.lmctruck.com Go here: http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cc/full.aspx?Page=57 All other engines use a two piece shroud. In Texas and for A/C, you should install a shroud. Welcome to the site. |

Re: Fan shroud on a 4.1?
Thanks gchemist, that's what I was after. Walkerb, I was trying to figure out what additional brackets I might have to buy to bolt the shroud to, and it looks like LMC has that covered. I have the shop manual but it's not too helpful in this case.
The LMC shroud seems pricey; RockAuto and one other place have the one piece shrouds for $10 (!). Granted , they are probably made of old milk containers and plastic bags but that's a huge difference. And yes, I am concerned about the cooling, so I'll do it. I tried to drain the radiator and not a whole lot came out, so I'm just going to flush it and replace the radiator and heater core as well. And the water pump, so I figured hey , throw the shroud in too. But, most of the parts I have replaced so far are $10 - $20, I love it. |
