You need lots of lube and push it in really hard. :p

Warm it up with a heat gun, spray some silicone on it and push. The very tip of the bumper will go through the hole. Try working the rest through using a tiny screwdriver or pick. Once you have some of it through, grab it from the back with a needlenose pliers and work it some more. Reapply silicone lube as needed.

Re: How do you install rubber door plug.

You mean the anti-rattle bumper thingies? Isn't there a hole in the center of the bumper to insert a poker tool of some kind? When you push on the tool it will stretch the bumper lengthwise, reducing it's width allowing it to pop into the hole in the door jamb. Also, use a lube that will dry out and not stay slippery or it will be prone to popping out. If this is not what you are talking about, never mind.

Re: How do you install rubber door plug.

oem4me is on the right track, I have one of those tools, will try to get a pic of it later. It is a blunt punch looking tool with a shoulder that pushes against the outer edge while the pin stretches the pointed tip into the hole.

They've got specific tools for every job, I guess ... I think I just used a skinny allen key.

Re: How do you install rubber door plug.

By the way, can you pull one of these out (of a salvage truck) to reuse? I need one and figured I'd just pull one out of an old truck sometime. Or am I wasting my time trying that?

Re: How do you install rubber door plug.

There's 2 sizes, I think they changed in mid- to late 1964. The end that pops into the hole is larger for the later years if I remember correctly. I had to drill the holes out to make them fit my truck.

Good ideas re: heat. Also use lube. Then use a punch-looking "line-up" tool (with a blunt end...see pic below)and push thru the outer hole in rubber, wobbling end of punch as you push/work tip into-and-thru hole. May hafta use a blunt-ended small screwdriver to help it along. BUT: they can be installed this way--I know, as I just put them in my '66. Not easy; just use patience.

Well then, why not just use the punch & drive the tapered portion into hole & just "flare" the opening, slightly, to make tit start sliding thru easier? [May hafta grind off/shorten punch to get to the flared portion sooner.]

Re: How do you install rubber door plug.

I'd really rather this forum stay the way its been in regards family friendly.
No this isn't nudity, but I tell my wife this forum isn't lowrider magazine. A sexist magazine.
There's young ones that enjoy this forum with their dad building trucks - father and daughter projects.
