9 Inch question
Ok guys here's the deal. My 64 stepper has no original rear end.i do have a 9 inch from a 79 Ltd 2 . There is also sentimental reasons for using the 9, cost is not a real factor here.i have the tools and ability to shorten and do the welding properly. My question is does anyone know the lengths for the axle tube from pinion centerline to wms or backingplate? With pinion centered in frame? Done a lot of reading and searching on here but I have found just about every other measurement

Re: 9 Inch question
factory wms to wms is 62", 31" each side would put you centered , but you can use any length from 60" to 63.5" without issues.

Re: 9 Inch question
The axle width on your LTD-2 is 63.5 inches, more than likely is a 273-1 gears, not a performance gear set, freeway flyer yes....

Re: 9 Inch question
I installed a 9" from a 77 LTD with no modifications at all. I bought a set of trailing arm perches from Brothers and welded them to axle housing at the same angle as the stock rear. The rear end I had was also the 5x5 lug pattern. I did replace the 2:73 gears with 4:10's and hated them. This was a posi rear from factory with disc brakes.
I don't have this truck anymore but I did happen to find a few pics. Made me looking at my old pics.

Re: 9 Inch question
The length of the left and right axle tubes with flanges are going to depend partly on what brakes you will be running. And of course what WMS width you are after. As stated above, 62" is the stock width for a '60 to early '70 C10 differential.

Re: 9 Inch question
Are they going to be GM brakes or Ford brakes? GM and Ford use a different brake offset.

Re: 9 Inch question
Captn, I left the stock Ford disk brakes on mine. Had cables made for e brake, put a proportion valve and worked great. Wouldn't that be the way to go? I liked my old set up so much I bought another 9" just like what I had and putting under my 63. I have a 72 rear with 5x5 under mine now and wasn't much different in width than the 9".

Re: 9 Inch question
Yeah, that's fine as long as the wheel bolt pattern is what you want. The 9" with the 5x5 pattern was only used for 3 years.

Re: 9 Inch question
Will be the gm calipers the rearend is a non disc rear. I have weld on calipers mounts so the offset can be dealt with.
