Bug / Windshield Hood Deflecter ?

Tried searching for pics without much success so figured would ask here. Anyone have a bug or windshield hood deflecter on their 67-72 truck, Burb or Blazer? Curious on this as since I had my truck painted (4 yrs. ago) I have picked up some very minor road rash issues. In the "wonder what that would look like" stages right now. Looking for the older vintage type stand up straight deflecter in smoke or clear color. Had one on a '77 Blazer years ago and liked it, never see them on the 67-72 body style locally.

Here is the clear one on my '70. The only thing I don't like about it is the space between the bottom lip of the hood and the bottom of the deflector. It does save the front from rock chips. It won't keep a tree from falling on your hood though...

Re: Bug / Windshield Hood Deflecter ?

Leon, that is exactly what I was referring to. Is that a recent addition to the truck or has it been on there awhile? Do you recall where you got it? Will have to check with a couple parts houses and see if it is available to order. Think I would like a smoke colored for my truck as it is dark blue metallic but either clear or smoke would be good. Give it the "old school look" which I are, LOL. Come with all the attaching hardware? My '77 Blazer used stainless metal plates to attch from the deflecter to the hood.

I think this one has been on there since the truck was new or shortly after. I am the second owner and it had a slide in camper on it when I bought it.

I believe they were made by a company called "Lund" might try looking them up and see if they're still available

Re: Bug / Windshield Hood Deflecter ?

I used to take these off of about every truck I got for a long period of time. I didn't like them because I just didn't want any add-ins. But,most were not really bad. They didn't stick above the hood so didn't stand out too bad when clear No one was painting them to match back then and I better you'd have to look twice to see one done that way. They do make sense because that front of the hood is a chip magnet

I used to buy deflecta-shield brand. They worked good, would only get bugs up in the shaded part of windshield. In the winter you didn't get enough water for the wipers to work right unless it was really pouring.

Re: Bug / Windshield Hood Deflecter ?

Have you considered an invisible bra? That's what you get on the new cars and trucks. It's just a skin of transparent plastic that's rock resistant. It's not that expensive, especially if you buy a kit on ebay. It doesn't have to be specific to our trucks, just get one that is for a wide enough vehicle, and cut to fit. They're not hard to install. You don't even know they're there unless you are washing your truck and you feel it. That is what I did to set up my Harley. I still have tons left over. I'll probably do this to my truck when it finally gets a paint job.

What a great idea DGulliver! I have chips in my hood too and I 've never liked the look of the bug shields. The "invisible bra" is something I've been wanting for my daily driver (Honda) because they are very tough, very hard to spot, and don't change the lines any. Good thinking man!

The 'invisible bra' type clear tape is made by 3M and others and works well if you're worried about chips and road rash.

Or, you could just keep it in the garage under a cover and not take it out if you're saving it for someone else to enjoy

Re: Bug / Windshield Hood Deflecter ?

Thanks for the feedback and replies on this guys. Have never heard of the "invisible bra" tape. Will look into that, might be an option. 'Course being that I am definetly "old school" as my boys say I like the idea of the stand up deflecter.

Not for everyone as you point out JointTech but then these trucks all lend themselves to so many varied and individual tastes. Myself I don't have much use for a short bed as I want the carrying capacity of an 8' length but for a "street is neat" look a short wide or short step fills the bill. Also don't like the newer 18" & 20" wheels and lowered chassis. But many guys want that look and don't care for my stock heighth 4x4 on rallies, too much old school look. That's why it's all good, individual tastes applied to each individual truck.

Re: Bug / Windshield Hood Deflecter ?

The first place I saw those was in the west in the early '70s. They were gravel shields, stone deflectors (or whatever), because so many roads were unpaved. They were to save your windshield. As I recall they were all clear. Later in the '70s, when "truckin'" really kicked in all over, they called them bug deflectors. They came out with smoked, then a bunch of colors. They were real popular and could be a canvas for puttin' your "handle" on or...whatever.

Re: Bug / Windshield Hood Deflecter ?

I'm using a product from 3M called Paint Defender. It's a spray on film, dries clear, nearly invisible, and they claim it lasts a year and is easily removable. I use in below the lower trim, have about 8K miles in a little over a year and no chips. I messed up on the first panel I shot and it came off easily after it dried. I plan on re-shooting below the trim, wheel wells front and back, and the front hood area for 2014 Power Tour.

Cool Re: Bug / Windshield Hood Deflecter ?

Can you give us a link for it. I would like to try it as well before the Power Tour.
I found it. Thanks for the tip, I will try it after the truck comes back from the 6.0 install.
Beats the bug shield.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

I'm pretty sure 3m calls their clear film "clearguard" or they did 10 years ago anyways.

Re: Bug / Windshield Hood Deflecter ?

LMC actually sells a pretty nice one that fits the front of our trucks. It is smoke color and resembles more of the "new" style bugshields.
