what brand do you run?
Im ordering some new rear gears and I got a really good deal lined up on some richmond, but I hear they are junk. Any truth to that. Just looking for some more input. thnks

I heard that some richmond gears were soft, but i dont know either way.

maybe the guy just didn't sell richmond and wanted me to buy a diffrent brand. He said they were really loud?

Soft rear end gears are not necessarily a bad thing.
Some gear sets are available in normal and soft versions. The normal ones last a long time. The soft ones are for high shock, high horsepower applications. A hard gear will be brittle and tend to chip teeth under extreme shock loads ie. slicks and 1/4 mile launches. The gear companies make softer gears for this reason. They may not last as long, but they won't break as easily. It's all about getting the right gear for the application. |

ok heres the deal on rear gears most of them are really good but some ratios do make noise from different companies. they arent making noise because they are junk they are making noise because every ratio is cut on the same angle unlike factory gears which are cut to be quiet

Rear Gears
this to share, installed a set of Yukon 3.23 in my 14 bolt full floater before going to 3.73 factory gear set and had absolutely no noise, or problems whatsoever. Got them from Randy's Ring and Pinion.

I will second that on the yukon gear's I run 4:11 's in my v-8 powered toyota pick-up.... No problem's

I had a set of Richmond's in an old Bronco and a set in my Toyota. I think they are JUNK broke both sets...

Richmond's been around since Christ was a Corporal....never heard anything bad about them. Noisewise, as long as you have the right shim between the pinion gear and bearing, and the correct preload on the internals, mesh should be good, and this noise should also be mininmal...
The ZZ4 you've got in there has got some ponies for sure, but you aren't pushing 600 horses and trying to get the front in the air. No need for something race inspired IMO.... |

I have Richmond 4.10s in the longhorn, & havent had any problems with them.......they have been run pretty hard too! Good luck,crazyL

I ordered the richmond 4:10's and an eaton posi!!! Hope to have it all in by next weekend for truckfest. Anyone know if there is a break in period on gears?

From what I have read....drive nice and easy for the first 20 miles or so, then park the rig. Let things sit and completely cool down to cold iron. Then for the first 500 miles or so, drive very conservatively, then pull the cover, drain the oil and give a quick visual inspection. Put all back together, then hammer down.

Yukon 3.90's for my HO52 10 bolt corp. axle and eaton carrier using a detroit locker. I got it through These Guys.
I've heard some complaints about Richmond, but I'd like to see proof that they're "loud" or "soft" before I'd put them down. Everyone I know personally who run them are happy as hell. I think price, warranty, availability, and history are the three factors - not just complaints.

I have Baer Gears brand new never drove on them yet. I have heard that there are a good company.

my son put a set in his 5.0 mustang, never had it long enough to see how durable they are, but they were noisy
