Steering gear swap
Does any one know if the steering gear will interchange between a 66 and a 71? My unit has a leak and I was given one off a friends truck he was going to use for a rat build and before I drove over to Fl. to take it off I thought I'd check with Ya'll. By the way will the manual three on the tree steering column swap out as well?
Thanks |

Re: Steering gear swap
The box may bolt up but the 67's had a problem[ not a problem just a feature maybe] with the frame having a flat spot in the area where in 68 on up through the 87 model year there was a bump to clear the side of the steering box case. A lot of people have made the later boxes work on the 67's by heating the area and then making the needed room with a ball-peen hammer. With that being said I would almost think that you could do what you are trying to do, but I would suggest that you go over to the 60-66 section and look in the FAQ or tech sections. If they are anything close over there like they are here for this body style, You will find a ton of stuff. As far as the column goes I know some have put the van tilts in there trucks all the way back to 60 so I would say that yes it would probably work as well, if there is a little modding skill in you I'm sure of it.
