Colour possibilities
Howdy,
I wanted to ask board members if pink, yes pink, could have been applied by the factory on a 1971 GMC C/K 1500 Sierra Custom Pickup Truck? Seller claims that the colour is original to the truck. I know that on some passenger cars a custom colour could be applied, but I have never heard of a chevy/gmc being painted in a non-standard colour. I think of Mary Kay Cadillac's and the odd Lincoln that were painted "pink", and additionally I can think of Camaro's, Corvettes and Firebirds that were delivered in primer, or painted in a colour that wasn't offered for the year. I can post pics of the truck, unfortunately the add has been removed. TIA, -Andrew

Re: Colour possibilities
There was a Variety Store in Wallaceburg Ontario, back in the day that had a pink C10. It was delivered in that color. Might be a Canadian thing?

Re: Colour possibilities
Also a neighbor had a lime green blazer back then as well. He bought it new in that color. It was not a variation of olive it was bright lime green, I can't find it in any of the paint chips.

Re: Colour possibilities
That crossed my mind too. I don't have access to the photo's at the moment, but when I get home I'll post to thread. The paint "looked" original from the ad, as the inside of the doors appeared to be unmolested. The seller called the colour "ice corral pink". It's two-tone, Pink and white. A quick google search provided this from the original ad:
https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/i...dEeocLulfBPVrQ and searching the board I came across this: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=220885 It's a great thread, and I guess it would seem that the pink "corral" and the aforementioned lime green are a "Canadian thing" lol. Anyone know what the deal was with the colours? Was it a promotion, a one-year only thing? I assume the colours are rare, but are they desirable on trucks? (I can think of Mopar's painted in the "high impact colours"...panther pink, sub-lime, etc) which add value to the car. This is only a guess on my part, but seeing as the ad was taken down so quick, I can ASSume that maybe the truck sold already, sold because the colour is desirable Regardless be great if someone can chime in with info Andrew

Re: Colour possibilities
Some photo's of the corral pink truck....
Ad is now gone Anyone have any good pics of the "lime" coloured offerings for 1971? I did a quick google search with no hits. Additionally, I assume that these two colours were only offered for 1971 as were all the "spring promotional colours" (there's that list provided in the other thread listed above). Any board members have pics of the other colours? Be interesting to see what they all looked like, in addition to knowing why the Canadian dealers were offering it. -A

Re: Colour possibilities
Here is a list of the special Canada colors.
IMO that pink truck would be both rare and desirable.

Re: Colour possibilities
Thanks for adding that pic to this thread. I just googled a bit more, and I can't even find a paint chip for any of those colours...Anyone good at "surfing", that can post to the thread?
Another question I have is, were those colour combo's listed available on any GMC i.e. C or K version, 1500, 2500, short, long wheel base, fleet-side/step-side, and on the GMC Sprint? -A

Re: Colour possibilities
I think board member HeavyD has or had a green one. Has a picture in his avatar of it.

Re: Colour possibilities
My dad had one Ice coral I think? His friend owned the GMC dealership and dad traded trucks every 6 months to a year or at 50kso it was normally 6 mo.He hated this one it was like none he had before it was a Grande and had tilt and tach and a bunch of moulding he said he hated those because when he would go to the pastures the bull would rub against the trucks and pull them off. The truck was order tabbacco juice brown so that when he spit down the side of it it didn't show as bad. He said he couldn't wait to get rid of it another reason was it was a swb and he hated those. When he did get rid of it he got two 73 3/4 tons both with 454's. Jim

Re: Colour possibilities
Board member Already Gone has a white/coral 71 GMC. The colour combo actually flows together quite nicely. I like the uniqueness of it.

Re: Colour possibilities
Wow. Funny things happen on the internet. A buddy just bought that truck in Alberta. Exact same picture as the one you posted. He does have the truck, so it does exist. Think he picked it up a about a month or so ago. Maybe two. But that would be why that ad was pulled. Scammer. I just talked to him this morning about looking for some patch panels etc for it.
Already Gone's Chevy is a beauty. And I love the other GMC in your link, #8. He was going to use that one as inspiration for his build. |

I wonder if the Canadian GMC's that were painted these colours were a) all built in Canada, and b) if they were "batch" built like a VIN sequence (or something similar)? Were dealers required to buy a few for their lots due to the "spring promotion", was it only specific dealers offering it? I've never come across any GMC's in those colours here in Ontario, was it only offered in Western Can - which provinces? -A

Re: Colour possibilities
Not too sure of any production numbers, or locations for that paint.
If he can find any more info, I will post it. Don't think it's his priority build. Could take a while. |

Re: Colour possibilities
It looks like the photo's that I had posted of the pink truck have been "around the block" a few times.
More digging on this board brought me to this old thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php?p=6287619 Go figure....exact same pic, and attached is the SPID lable. Taking a closer look at the paint code: 40012C - Special Paint... The actual paint code for the coral pink is 51012 Also came across this on the "Canadian Poncho site" http://canadianponcho.activeboard.co...2599759&page=2 non of the jpeg links work directly from the site (some care to try and find the files?), but it is interesting to note that this is Chevy not just GMC's! Interesting ad (Seller calls the green a Hemi Green, and then scroll down the page two posts and read one of the responses.... concerning that special order 1971 Chevy truck, I remember seeing 2 special order 1971 pickups in pink! One was a basic Chevrolet Custom 10 Fleetside owned by a local Shell gas station in Ancaster, Glendale Motors. I thought they had it painted after taking delivery, that is until I saw a brand new 1971 GMC 1500 Wideside on the lot at the Pontiac Buick GMC dealer in Port Dover, Ontario back in 1971 in the same pink colour. I believe that one was a Sierra Grande as it had the moldings on it. Both trucks had a white 2-tone on the roof, the GMC I think also had a white 2-tone down low on the body at rocker level.) So, based on this response, it is possible that the special colours were nation wide? not just limited to the Western Provinces?.... Hard to find anything with the Mauve Metallic. I flipped through my Dupont Paint chip book, and there is nothing listed for the Green, the Pink or the Mauve. Closest pink I could find was from the Canadian Fleet section of the book for Red Deer Transit, paint code #93-72114. -A

Re: Colour possibilities
From another old thread titled Rarest Paint code?, (http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=301319&page=5
and to simply put all this together into one.... Better Pics of the green from 1971... In this same thread there are photo's of purple trucks (mauve is a type of purple isn't it?), but not from the 1971 model year (only from 1969 and 1970), there are a few pics of a dark"er" green truck as well but I believe it's from 1969....so I won't copy and paste them into this thread because I'm not sure if those other years match 1971. If anyone can add any insight...that'd be great! I've contact DuPont's Color Chip Historical Library http://pc.dupont.com/dpc/en/US/html/...color/hcl.html to see if they can offer any additional info (like a paint chip...) -A

Re: Colour possibilities
Sorry I missed adding to this thread, been trying to find a job and it hasn't worked at all..even with the Alberta move!
Anyway, here is one of the spid and one of it still rotting. Keep getting more parts, but never get it together. Maybe this summer?

Re: Colour possibilities
I would like to see the 'Oh! green'
The color list above shows the Coral pink and just pink. The links above look like two different pinks. Don't think they would have two? Wonder what the 'Mauve' looks like as well. |
