Build Thread

I'm new here, but I have been lurking for a while. This past weekend I purchased a '64 Chevy factory K10 long bed. It has a v8 and the 3 on the tree. I got it from a woman who's husband recently passed away. It was his "farm" truck, and has a dump bed. At this time I don't have any pics, but I'll get some tonight. I am really up in the air about what I should do with this truck. I really only bought the thing to help the woman out with the money. I am into 81-93 dodges (please don't flame me) so the chevy thing aint really up my alley; even though my dad has a pretty nice '69 k20 suburban. I do like to preserve anything old and cool though. I guess I am going to sell this thing, but I want to capitalize as much on my investment as possible, so I'm probably going to do some work to it first.

Should I find a long bed and put on it, or cut the frame and put a short fleet bed on it that I already found? Or, is it worth more original? I know this thread is worthless without pictures, but I''ll have them up tonight. Thanks for your advice in advance.

Would a stock long bed small back window bring more than a truck converted to a BBW and a short bed?

A short bed will always bring more than a long bed. If you have the bed already you have won the battle. The rest is easy.

Well, the "easy" part is removing the cab, cutting the frame, re-welding mounts, perfectly aligning and welding the frame, shortening the driveshaft, the brake lines, replacing the parking brake cables. Easy.

I know everyone says it, but thats not really a big deal... Too bad it aint a dodge cause I could justify doin it then. I think this jewel needs to go to some one who would appreciate it more. Definately not the crusher though!

Hey I think you should leave the bed thats on there now in my opinion....looks cool. But it yer truck! Whatever you do will be cool. Finding a long bed won't be hard...I have one. lol! It is nice to keep them stock, but if yer interested in selling it in the future then you will get more money and more people after it if you convert to a short bed. The short box fleetside trucks are harder to find....I have seen two in my area.

IMO a shortbed truck is easier to sell and should bring a little more $$. I say that since you have found a shortbed and if you have the skills to properly shorten the frame, do it.

Im leaning towards cutting this thing... I did some looking on here but cant find any info on shortening a 4x4. I read that the tv show trucks cut a c10, but I don't know how much of that info would pertain to a k10? Where does the frame get cut? Before or after the transfer case? Or right at the case? HA probably....

The ones I have done, I cut the frame just forward of the rear cab mount. I don't remember just where the transfer case is in relation to the rear cab mount, but I would say that it will need to be moved forward, and the front driveshaft and the intermediate driveshaft shortened. Otherwise the rear driveshaft will be rather short and may be at too much of an angle.

if it were my truck and i were planning to sell it i would get the shortbed and sell it with it. i dont believe you will get your money back out of it with all that work you will have to do. after all your time is worth something.

I would more than likely sell it as it is and save yourself a bunch of labour that you are not going to recoup. I would realistically figure out how much you are going to spend on fixing it in order to sell for a profit. remember that word profit- how much to you figure on your capitalization balance sheet over what you spend inc your labour?????
by the way did your dad put a newer frame under his 69??

If you aren't into chevys then don't waste your time/money on it. Leave it to the next guy.

I think its just sitting funny, cause the main leaf in the spring pack broke. We got it put back together this weekend though.
