engine oil pressure.
G'day. I have recently fitted a 402 bb. Its done a little over a thousand kilometres and was running sweetly. Coming home one night it starts making a light "tappety" noise. I check the oil pressure gauge and have no pressure, thats is I have no pressure under acceleration. At idle pressure reads about 40-50 psi. If I throttle on the pressure drops to zero. Whsn running right it was showing about 80 psi.. Does anyone have any suggestions as to whats goin on?

Re: engine oil pressure.
Sounds like the pump pick up screen may have fallen off

Re: engine oil pressure.
Flat tappet cam? If so... pull your valve covers and check for loose rocker arms. If it is the cam going flat on a couple of lobes... you will have a tremendous amount of metal particles in your oil that can kill an oil pump and bearings. Not tryin' to scare ya... but the "tappety" noise is usually a lifter eating it's way into the cam and the rocker arm is clacking on the valve stem and push rod.

Re: engine oil pressure.
x2 on the dropped pickup. it also could be a high volume pump running the sump dry.
Drain the oil. Reach in and wiggle with a cut clothes hanger or piece of stiff wire and see if you can hear the pump pickup rattle around in the pan.

Re: engine oil pressure.
You guys got me while I was typing and thinking (dangerous thing to do lol). I agree that it could be a pickup as well.

Re: engine oil pressure.
We have dropped the sump and checked the pump and pickup. All good there but we did findmetal particles Iin the oils. This motor was allegedly refreshed and re-ringed with slightly lumpier cams put in.
I apologize for the crappy spelling but I'm trying to do this on my phone wigh fat fingers! |
