Short or Long Water Pump?
Could anyone help?
On a small block, I'm going with electric fans and eventually an Old Air system, but for now it's just the p/s and the alternator that I have to run. Would I need a new p/s bracket and alternator bracket if I switch to long water pump? I have a newer large damper. Will that cause a conflict? |

Old Air recommends keeping the stock mechanical fan with clutch and a shroud for their units. The best location for the alternator and p/s pump is drivers side. Makes for a cleaner A/C compressor install. I don't know about the conversion to long pump though but do know that they need to know short or long pump when ordering the A/C unit for the pulleys to line up. I'm pretty sure the brackets for the p/s and alternator need changed do to the pulley location changing. Since I believe cars with 350 from the mid 70's on had long pumps the brackets should be available readily in the junk yard.

I think the brackets will need to be changed. Our trucks came with the short pump w/ the PS brackets mounted to the block and engine mount. with a long pump the PS bracket is mounted w/ the wp and block. The long pumps deput in late 60s in the GM cars and trucks in 73 I believe. Except w/ vettes.

The brackets will need to be changed if switching to a long neck water pump as will crank & water pump pulleys. The larger 8" harmonic balancer will not affect choice of water pumps or pulleys.
