Jammed ignition cylinder lock
2000 Silverado Z71 auto all power
The ignition cylinder/lock was starting to catch and once in a while would jamb a little . I removed the lock and had it rebuilt at a locksmith . I reinstalled the rebuilt lock and it was turning smooth with no jambs at all . last night I shut down the truck , placed the shift lever in park position , wiggled the steering wheel to check it was in locked position and then turned the key on/off 3 times to make sure everything was OK and it was still working perfect . This morning I got in ( touched absolutely nothing ) and the key will not turn no matter what I do . I don't understand what could do that . Again I touched nothing except locking the doors . I have tried moving the steering wheel all ways , pulling the shift lever while stepping on the brake , tapping the key and everything else and it won't turn . Does someone have an idea what is jambing this up . Is there any electrical locking function when you turn the key off ? Thanks |

Re: Jammed ignition cylinder lock
So I just went out again and when I put the key in , it turned and started easy as pie . ????? Also the locksmith made new keys for the lock rebuild , so the keys are tuned to the rebuilt lock .

Re: Jammed ignition cylinder lock
Better late than never Dept:
I'm thinking that the same thing kept happening to me. The key would only turn when AAA road guy would turn it.:waah You have to remove the ignition cylinder to fix the problem. These photos show what I found to be my problem. 1st pic. is of ignition cylinder showing a pin that I've pushed back out of the slot so you can see it. 2nd pic. is of the ignition cylinder with the "slot" the pin goes into to lock the steering column. I made that incline smoother with a Dremel carbon polishing attachment and then some graphite powder. |
