Quick Blazer tank install question.

I installed my tank where I thought it should go, everything lined up perfect and if fit great, until I dropped the bed on the frame this weekend. The 3rd bed support back hits the top of the tank and the filler neck! Do you have to trim that support to fit the tank? Unless I turn the whole tank around and move it as far back as I can, I don't see how this is supposed to fit. Anyone have any pics from underside? My filler neck points straight at the hole for the bed mount on that support.

Any thoughts? Every picture I've seen as I've done a search shows me I have the tank mounted correctly. My bed is shortened, but it looks like the support is in the correct place.

It's correct. You have to cut the support. My truck is a stepside and I don't use my bed, I completely removed mine.

my tank is in the same place and I saw a thread where you have to cut the support. don't remember what thread I saw it in thou.

I looked all over the place and couldn't find a thread that showed anything like that... even found the FAQ thread about the tank install. So that means you lose an entire support, so only 3 supports for the bed? Doesn't that weaken the bed floor between the 2nd and 4th support?

No, you don't lose an entire support. I removed my support because I don't use my bed and I have treated deck boards as a floor.

Yes, the floor is flimsy. My truck hasn't had more than a few bags of trash in the bed in the past 15+ years.

I've seen lots of people cut the support. Some weld back a plate, some don't.

You should only have to cut inside the frame rails.

well you don't lose the entire support......I haven't got that far yet in my build. I was going to cut out what I need to and rebuild it somehow, sorry I cant help out anymore.

My filler is hitting the support, so there wouldn't be much left of the support on the driver's side. I could keep the support from the frame out on the passenger side and use the mount bolt there... but the driver's side would be tough. I'll have to see how I can save as much as I can of it.

I think the answer is gonna be after the clearance is gained that you need, you may have to box that support in to give it back some muscle. I think that would be just fine if you were to box in the rail there it would be plenty stiff again. A whole lot better than not having one at all or one that is trimed way down. Jim

Is it possible to relocate a frame cross member to shift the tank for or aft?? I recalled reading somewhere about removing a cross member and flipping it 180 end for end and reinstalling it to gain room? Just a thought.

What about relocating the support? you's have to fill in the old bolt square holes and re drill and file 2 new ones if the carriage bolts go thru them.

Actually that's what I am planning on doing. I'm going to keep the mounting in the same spot, but move the support out of the way of the tank. Probably going to move it forward towards the cab. Not sure yet, gotta do some measuring. For now the support is coming out, and when I get to finishing the bed I'll figure that out. Glad I wasn't doing anything wrong, I don't want to us the in cab tank!!

I cut the support down on the underside of the bed, and removed the front brace and also moved the tank as far back as I could, my truck is a 4x4 and it clears the support just fine now, the tank is a poly replacement and I know others have had problems with the metal tanks neck not being able to line up, but I'm betting if you can move yours back it will clear, not sure why the search didn't help a lot of others have done this, anyway here are a few pics.

If I can slide the tank back that far I should probably be able to get the filler on that side. Would save the trouble of adding another support. Thanks for the pics!

My Boyd's tank sits below the frame rails on my K20, maybe a different talk would be a better option? Just a thought. For reference i also have a long bed so i know my situation is different than a short bed.

yea long beds are different. The higher up you can get the tank the better, I would guess that would be even more important in a 4x4 for ground clearance. When it was installed right my tank hung down about the same height as the bottom of the bedside. I wouldn't want it to be any lower, personally, especially with a 5" drop in the back.

Not sure if you can see what we had to do. It was lowered so we had to cut a relief in to got the lowered leaf springs and shackles some clearance.

There's an episode of Trucks where they installed that gas tank and they show how to modify the bed. They also installed a gas filler door behind the side marker. I though tit was worth watching.

I welded in a filler door and fuel fill neck from a 1991 S10 pickup page 1 of my build thread has a few pics, I got the idea from others here on the site and gave it a try.
