Horn issues
1971 K5 with non tilt column.
I haven't been able to get my horn to function at the steering wheel. I removed the steering wheel cap and removed the pink plastic ring, the silver dog dish, the domed metal ring and discovered my steering was missing the horn contact plunger/Spring/plastic barrel. I ordered parts and new relay just in case. Not able to get horn to function by shoving a screw driver into the canceling cam and touching the brass on the bottom. So far I've done the following: 1) Horn was hard wired to the battery and it functions. 2) Replaced horn relay with a new one. 3) Unplugged harness at the relay. I jumped red wire to green wire and horn functioned. Where do I go from here? I'm stuck and frustrated. Should I remove the steering wheel and see if the brass tab is actually connected to the black ground wire? |

What does it do if you short the spring loaded plunger to the steering shaft nut? LockDoc

Re: Horn issues
I just touched a wire to the brass tab at the bottom of the canceling cam to the steering wheel nut. Nothing happen.
I know the spring goes first, then the plunger with the plastic barrel head first. How far is the plunger suppose to stick out? |

Re: Horn issues
If you touch the plunger to steering shaft and nothing happens check the rag joint. There should be a strap that carries the ground from one side of the rubber to the other side.

Re: Horn issues
SCORE! Ray and Ol Blue you are absolutely right! I just short wired the inside of that hole to the steering shaft and HORN went off. I guess I need to order that part. LMC doesn't show it in their catalog. Any ideas where to get this part?

Re: Horn issues
You are missing the contact in the turn signal switch. The easiest fix is a new switch....

Re: Horn issues
Like I mentioned, it's easiest to get new switch. You can always try and steal one out of a switch at the wrecking yard. I'm not sure how the contact is secured in the switch though...keep us informed. ..

Re: Horn issues
Might as well go with the new turn signal switch. Any site vendors I should use?

Re: Horn issues
The last one I bought I got it at Napa auto parts. That way no shipping no wait...

Re: Horn issues
It did not Have the the straight red one. I'm not sure if those are reported or not and if they are what the quality is. The one thing I forgot to mention is read through the thread Loc Doc has linked for the horn button it has good info. I have seen more than one thread on that.

Re: Horn issues
Anybody know if the brass contact I'm missing in my turn signal switch is spring loaded or how it's attached. I can see the ground wire way in the back of the empty hole on mine.

Re: Horn issues
Decided to order from site vendor. GMCPaul took my order and then 48 hours later send me a "back order" email and order cancellation. Not a good first experience with a site vendor.

Re: Horn issues
Don't get discouraged, I haven't purchased anything from him yet but I have heard a lot of good things about them. A lot of places would have made you wait for the back order. At least he cancelled the order so you could look elsewhere.

Re: Horn issues
Anybody know what is actually behind the brass button for the horn ground on the turn signal switch? Is it Spring loaded? Is it a part that can be rebuilt from another turn signal switch if I go to a junk yard? I'd hate to pay 50.00 for one, if I can just add the button from a used one.

Re: Horn issues
It is spring loaded. I have never tried to take one out. I would go to a wrecking yard and try though. ..

Re: Horn issues
I never updated my fix, so here it is. I found a brass button, Spring and retainer plate for my cancelling cam on this board. I paid 5.00 bucks for it and just rebuilt mine. I put it all back together and my horn is officially operational. My K5 passed inspection with flying colors!
I couldn't have done it without you guys. I'm actually proud that I did it the right way and was able to figure it out finally. I'm learning as I go along and having a blast along the way so far. This turned out to be an epic horn thread and should be a stickie for HORN 101. I hope others will someday do a search and this thread will help them out. With my brass ground button installed. |

Clean all that Texas turf out of there with some electronic spray cleaner before you reassemble all of it .
