New Process transmission
I have a New Process 4 speed (overdrive) manual transmission that came out of a 1981 Chevy pickup. It's not working now (made a horrible sound in the truck) when I heard it several years ago.
Is it any good for my '67 inline 6? Where can I find the gear ratios? Is it worth fixing or am I better off with a 700R4 or 2004R? Thanks, Mike P.S. If it's worth fixing, the 67's bell housing won't fit the spline. My bell housing supports the engine. overdrive 4 speed in a truck ? it should be a toploader 435C or 435CR, the ratios between the two are not the same, one is tighter ratio pack than the other, ive always wanted to score one of those 435CR trannies- but theyre damned uncommon,,, what do you mean by any good for 6 cyl ? you cna use a bellhousing off a 67-72, any will bolt onto it these trannies were available for our trucks too, but only one person on this forum has one in their truck. 435C: 1rst 6.68 2nd 3.34 3rd 1.66 4th direct 435CR: 1rst 4.56 2nd 2.28 3rd 1.31 4th direct the only o/d trannies there were before 1982 were the three speed saginaw with the M10 option add on unit [This message has been edited by Fast68Chevy (edited March 27, 2002).] |

Fast, the tranny is allumium cased, and made it into a few early 80's fullsize Chevy trucks. If i understand correctly, it is the same design as a Mopar 4-spd. that made it into their muscle cars during the 60's-70's. Im not sure on any of this though. The model number is NP822 i think. I posted once on it, and got some results at www.chevytalk.com . Go to the 73-87 trucks forum. People said it wasn't really strong, but it would proably hold up behind a I6.

Fast, it will bolt into the '67 bellhousing but will not fit. The bellhousing hole is too small for the spline base (the part the throwout bearing rides on).
Yellow, I'll have to go out and look at the transmission number but you are right about it being aluminum. The fourth gear is overdrive and the third is 1:1 or close to that. It might not be strong, but it used to shift well in the I6 it was in before. Will it hold up long or is it just plain weak? Sounds like the input shaft bearing is probably bad. Get a bellhousing for an SM465 which has the larger diameter pilot for the bearing retainer. The tranny should be great in your application once you rebuild. Overdrives always wear out before a non-overdrive because you are running power through the countershaft when in top gear. A 4 speed overdrive usually reverses 3rd and 4th in the trans. What would have been third gear in a regular 4 speed switches the big and little gear to make an OD and then 4th which is one to one becomes 3rd and the OD 3rd is now 4th. When in 4th gear, the input is locked to the mainshaft and power goes straight through so there is very little wear on the trans relative to running in OD.

wow, interesting......., never thought chevy was using same tranny as mopar then, wierd...
yeah a 465/420/326/318 bellhousing should fit on it, as they have the larger pilot/retainer hole in them. chevy bellhousing sin our years were all the same casting number good luck [This message has been edited by Fast68Chevy (edited March 27, 2002).] |

I ran through 4 of them over a 6 yr. period and then finally changed to the 700-R4. Best thing I ever did for my truck. First gear went out in 3 of them and 2 in one, got tired of changing them, I have 2 of them still with the casings at the house. Transmission place said it was cheaper to buy them out of a junk yard than to build them. Both are torn down and in boxes. Just wanted to let you know, what kind of luck I had with them.

Thanks for the input. I looked at the casing and it's numbers are C-15390.
