Axle Leak How to Fix
Good morning everybody. Working on my son's truck again. I believe the truck has a 12 bolt rear end, can someone verify for me please. Also, on the passenger side where the tube goes into the pumpkin housing there is gear oil gathering there. Is this because it is leaking there? Do I weld this up to fix the leak? Sorry for the crappy picture but it was late when I took the picture.

Yep it has 12 bolts. I've never seen the tubes leak where it meets the pumpkin but I'm sure they can. people do weld the tubes for strength so it can be down. I think the pumpkin is cast so it's harder to weld

Re: Axle Leak How to Fix
The reason that I ask is because I have read that it has something to do with the shape of the housing, not always the number of bolts that are holding the cover on. I was just wanting to make sure. Thanks.

I know it sounds crazy but before you go trying to weld the "leak", replace the axle vent, rather put a new hose on there and make sure the fitting on the diff is not plugged. if it has a plastic vent on the end of the hose replace that too. The reason is I have read many times on here that a leak at the tube weld is caused by the air expansion inside the diff when the vent is plugged, the pressure builds inside and forces a leak through a tiny void in a tube weld. Cheap easy thing to check first anyway.

Re: Axle Leak How to Fix
I agree that it is probably the vent. Possibly overfilled? Is there a hose on the vent nipple.
There were some 12-bolt BOP (Buick Olds Pontiac) axles that had 12 bolt carriers with a 10 bolt cover. So it is correct that it is actually the number of bolts holding the ring gear on, and not the number of cover bolts. However... 95% of them match the bolt count for the cover. The BOP axles described above are a pretty rare find these days. Gary

Thanks for the info guys, I will look into the axle vent and replace it, watch and see if my leak goes away.

Re: Axle Leak How to Fix
How much is it leaking? Just a little dampness or puddle on the garage floor?

Re: Axle Leak How to Fix
It is more than just dampness but I don't have anything on the floor yet. It isn't severe at this point.
