Bertha
So here's Bertha.
70 GMC c10 with 402/400. At least it did I sold the motor and tranny, and picked up a 5.3 with about 1000 miles on it. It's going in with my nv3500. I want to turbo the 5.3 so bad, but I don't think the nv3500 would take it, and its gonna be my wifes DD. She gets a little road ragey. I don't think she needs 600 horse. I'm in the middle of cleaning and painting the motor and front clip, but I'll try to keep up on the pics. Im also selling the seats, and replacing them with seats from a newer Chevy. My plan is to make her a reliable DD/family hauler. After I get my truck done, and get my Nova on the road, then I'll do a more in depth restoration and repaint. |

Yeah, I lucked out. She belonged to a friend. I'm remodeling his office and house, and he let me make payments.

Re: Bertha
OH NO !! Who gave you the LS kool aid? I hope you don't get to much static for taking out that BBC to put in a LS. I love my 5.3 and never want to go back. Keep us posted on your build and your welcome to drink all the Kool Aid you want.

Re: Bertha
I like the white, but my wife doesn't. We'll deal with it later. The windows will be tinted for sure, and I have wide 17's and 295/50's. Originally, I was gonna do a 6.5 turbo diesel, but the one I have ended up not being any good. And I just wasn't feelin it. So I started researching LS's again. I called a scrapper that I've dealt with before, and he had a low miles 5.3 longblock, plus all the other parts and pieces I need. So I sold the 402, gave him the cash and a pistol I had, and came home with it. My wife still has a few pics I need to upload.

Re: Bertha
So this motor sat is his shop for a few years, and I think a few sensors were bogarted. I can't find picture diagrams anywhere. So, I'll post a few pics.
Here is the drivers side of the fuel rail Right above the oil filter This is facing down right by the crank sensor. Drivers side, front drivers side front near exhaust flange. Im thinking this one is a coolant temp sensor Oil pressure? Im assuming this a PCV, but where does it run? |

Re: Bertha
I'm not the authority on these things, so hopefully someone will correct me if I give you a bum steer.
1) fuel pressure regulator 2) oil cooler (or block-off in most cases) 3) & 4) are coolant drains plugs i think. 5) yup coolant temp sender 6) yup oil psi sender 7) yup PCV, mine runs to the pass side up near the throttle body. will double check that when I get to the shop today. subscribed to thread. really wanna see how the nv3500 works for you. I wish I didnt chicken out and buy a slushbox. |

Re: Bertha
With the size of my shop, I'm always pushing or pulling rigs in and out. And some of these full size pigs don't move real easy through soggy gravel and slush. So I got a little help today.
Cheap little 2000# atv winch bolted to the center 8x8 on my back wall. Works surprisingly well. After I got that done and got Bertha pulled in, I got the block cleaned and painted. Then bolted the tranny and oil pan on to see how its gonna sit in there. Sure looks tiny in there compared to the big block that came out. I think I need to swap the towers from left to right, and then make my mounts. The tranny placement is perfect. The crossmember works, and I dont need to change the driveline. And I'm pretty sure the yoke is right too. I also picked up my flywheel today. Woops, got the pics reversed. But you get the idea. |

Re: Bertha
Still trying to round up all my small parts. What a pain. I found a set of motor mount plates on ebay for ~$30. Thats cheaper than I can make them so they're on the way. I swapped the BB towers from side to side and I think I'm really close. I should get the conversion plates by friday. Today I dropped the fuel tank so I can start on the fuel sysyem. I'm trying to figure out an economical way to do this. I know there are "kits" out there for everything, and gold plated AN adapters. But I don't have the budget for that. So I'm researching different options using OEM equipment. Any suggestions?

Just scanned through your build. Was the suburban tank too wide to fit up in the frame rails?

Re: Bertha
Got my motor mount plates installed and set the motor and tranny in place.
Lots of room around everything. Tomorrow I'm running back over to the place I got my engine to pick up the rest of my parts and hopefully all the bolts I need. |

Re: Bertha
On saturday i went back to where i bought my 5.3 and picked up most of the rest of the parts I need. While I was there I grabbed the fuel pump module and fuel lines from an 04 Silverado frame he has. Today I am in Spokane, so I ran by Spalding Auto and got bolts, and a few more parts I needed. They were having a liquidation sale on bucket seats. I picked up a decent pair from a Toyota Sienna for $10. Hopefully they'll work but at that price I couldn't turn it down.
I bolted the truck exhaust manifolds I have on to check fitment. The drivers side will work no problem, but the passenger side is a little close. Since I'm using big block motor mount towers, the engine sits higher. The passenger side flange is actually above the frame a little. I think I'm gonna modify both manifolds for vbands anyway. My neighbor runs a cnc mill, and he owes me a favor. Hes gonna make me the aluminum rings I need for my fuel pump module, and im gonna see if he can make some vband flanges. I need to snap a few picks when I get home. |

Re: Bertha
First, thanks for popping into my NV3500 thread. I really appreciate any help I can get.
Secondly, I can't wait to see how this turns out. Good looking Burb to start with and only getting better. Lastly, that 2nd picture that is of the side of the oil pan. Littlevictories is correct. That is for an oil cooler. The only thing to keep in mind is that there is a specific piece that bolts onto that if you are not using the oil cooler. The piece allows oil to flow from one side to the other. In other words, it isn't a good idea to bolt a flat piece of metal across the 2 holes. If you need one, I believe I have an extra one kicking around the shop. I can check and ship it to you for the price of some pictures of your trans/slave cylinder setup. James |
