New guy with a 1968 k20 burb.

So I just received a gift in the form of a 1968 Chevy K 20 suburban. Just needs a little bit of bodywork. Paint and some new tires. Has a new 350 and the tranny had just recently been going through.it also has the interior from a newer Tahoe. I have always been a fan of the 67 to 72 trucks. But now that I have a suburban I absolutely love it. But I am also new To this forum and to this type of vehicle. If anybody could give me some info that would be great. I have been told that the 68 K 20 is somewhat rare? Just wondering the value of these suburbans? I would like to put a 3 or 4 inch lift on it and run 33's or 35's not sure yet... Bur I have read that it is hard to find a lift because of the back leaf springs are are longer or shorter than 69-72 . Idk! But any information would be helpful. I plan on starting the build sometime this year. I would put pictures up but still trying to figure out how to on my iPhone. As soon as I get back to my laptop I'll post some pictures.

Welcome to the forum!

The 1968 K20 Suburban is one of the lowest production Suburbans, documentation is vague but numbers show only 299 of that model rolled off the line in 1968.

Take some time to browse the build section, and you will find guys like yourself neck deep into their projects.

Welcome! Glad to see another 68 K20.

If you want to see 4" and 35s, take a look at the build thread in my signature as it's on 35s in most of the pictures. As far as the rear leaves, I ran stock leaves/shackle with a shackle flip for a 4" lift. Unfortunately the previous owner had lift blocks that bent the stock springs with diesel torque. I'm now running stock rear springs out of an 80s 3/4T Burb (56" length, so 4" longer than most leaves, but still a common size). They are a narrower spring eye so I'm running small spacers inside the frame mount to bushing and 69-up rear shackles.

Wow thanks guys for all the feedback! Can already tell that this forum is going to be very helpful. Also I was wondering if the burbs have any problem areas or common things that might Be a good idea replacing? This is not going to be a show Quality suburban. That's not what I'm going for. I'm going to try to make this thing more of my hunting/camping rig. But still a nice enough I can cruise the family around in it... One of the first things I would like to do as a power steering conversion. Is there anybody out there that makes the kit for that? Or am I going to have to hunt and Frankenstein some things together?

I run an adapter plate from Captain Fab to use a 69-up steering box on my frame. A previous owner had just used spacers but I continually snapped mounting bolts. The 79-87(91) have metric o-rings, but you can use them as long as you use a pump from the same year (or change fittings on your pump). Best bet would be to source the pump and box from the same truck in a junkyard. Whenever I pull one I also take at least the bottom half of the rag joint, it's easy to bolt apart and you get the correct spline count.

I like the metric boxes as they can integrate hydro-boost brakes very easily.

Where did you get Chevy seats? Hands down the most comfortable, I am looking for a rear bench seat like yours with the built in seatbelts.

Welcome on board, Bro' - spent most of my in-country time between JBLM and Hunter. Got out almost a decade ago...seems like only yesterday and a life time ago!

That is one hell of a gift and I recommend becoming friends with Chris (VECTORIT)on this site...his 68 Sub is probably one of the finest Suburbans out there. He has a few threads around here and one in the Suburban projects that kind-of recaps what he did to his. Good luck with your new Sub!

Thats cool. I just got out back in april. JBLM was my last duty station. Had a lot of fun up there but man i'm glad to be out of the rain! lol And yeah i have been stalking VECTORIT'S Burb for a few years now. lol But now that i'm out of the ARMY and have a bit more free time i'm going to start the build.

What a wonderful vehicle! I love the painted bumpers and 3 speed on the column. I really want something similar but with the "barn" doors.
