what mask to wear/weld thru primer
I was going to use some weld thru primer and was wondering if my charcoal mask is OK

NO it's not, you need a mask for welding. I am so glad to see you asking this because it's something that is neglected way too much! That weld thru primer is ZINC you are breathing ZINC when you weld it. It produces "Zinc fume fever", and can cost you your lungs, NO JOKE. We aren't talking over your lifetime it's going to shorten your life a few days later on, I am talking RIGHT NOW you are going TODAY to the hospital and never going to be the same!
Keep a fan going too to blow away the fumes. Just don't direct it right at the weld because it will blow away the shielding gas from your MIG. Here is the 3M mask that is disposable and the one I have to use in my welding helmet.
