Advice on Good fitting windshield glass and seal for my 55 2nd series GMC

Hi All,

I have been posting pictures of the progress on my 1955 GMC 150 in the build area. One area I am not happy with (and niether is my painter) is the fitment on the new windshield. He has had it in and out a dozen times with different seals and it just won't fit right. When I drove it to my shop the top edge of the glass even started to work it's way out of the molding. It looks bad in the corners too. It is a never wrecked truck and I am the 3rd owner and have complete tracability to when it was new. The issue is the glass, the seal or both.

Have others experienced this? I need a good source for both the glass and the rubber seal. from folks that have used them and are happy with the way they fit. Thanks for your help, this forum is awesome!

Below are some pics. Thanks again, Tom

Two words: Steele Rubber

They cost 3-times as much, but well worth it.

That at least sends you in the right direction.
Good luck. Looks like a fun truck. I love the color!

Yup. I DIDNT use it and my windshield fits...almost

In the inside upper driver's side corner, he rubber will NOT lay down flat. The shop I used took the glass in and out a half dozen times, used all the tricks they know and couldn't quite get it to cooperate. I'm living with it cause final paint is likely years away but then it WILL BE Steele.

Thanks! I have Steele Rubber products in my 38 Dodge coupe. Nice stuff. I don't know where these seals came from but at least 1 of them likely came from LMC Truck, so who knows where they are really from - they seem like a warehouse kind of deal to me.

Check the windshield, got one for my 69' and it was off 1/4" at the top of one corner, made the windshield stick way out at the top. Never seated in the rubber right. Sanded the corner down and it fit right in. Seems though that all of these new windshields and rubber can be hit or miss. I've got a windshield seal from classic parts and it seems like good quality. Haven't tried putting it in yet though.

One question, Do all the door gaps line up perfectly along with the cab being square on the frame with good mounts? If things don't fit perfect twall around the glass will never fit perfect or maybe even right as I found out with my tweaked original cab on the 48 when we went to put new glass in it. It didn't look that far off but it was far enough off to cause issues.

Was the glass new? Did it come from Mexico? I fought one made in Mexico for about 3 hours and broke it. Corners did not fit right and it was so thin it flexed a lot. After it broke, I grabbed the best original from my stash and had it in in 20 minutes and it fit perfect. All my trucks have an original windshield in them.

I still have my original it's not bad. I was hoping for new glass if I can find some that fits right. The door gaps are real nice and the doors open and close about as good as any 55-59 I have ever been in.
