Water Pump Question......short or long?
I'm ordering some stuff from Summit to get my truck back on the road.
One of the things I'm getting is a new water pump. Do I need a short or long pump? The truck is a '72 with the original 350. Also......any suggestions for a new timing chain cover? I was thinking of going with a 2 piece. Thanks

If its original, its most likely a short water pump. Dont get rid of
your existing water pump until you the new one to compare things with, esp...the pulley mounting flange distance. Sometimes they're not the same and can cause you grief when its time to put it all back together. My Opinion on the timing covers, I dont like two-piece as it makes for another point to leak from. On the otherhand, if your going to tune the cam in, using offsets, it may make it easier to get at....but for stock stuff, get a one-piece timing cover. while your in that far, take a good look at your harmonic balance seal point, alot of them wear down and even with a new seal will leak, unless of course you get a seal repair kit, in which it has a metal sleeve that makes a good seal with a new enlarged oil seal. Have fun!!!

Be careful about timing cover selection. Lots of times, the cover will hit the back of the water pump. The short pumps, like your truck uses, sit real close to the cover.

How are the pumps measured? From where the pump mounts to the block to where the fan/spacer mounts?
What are the measurments of the short and long pumps? Thanks all!
