Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
Hi all, I am starting to look into exhaust for my 76 4.8l swap. What are people running? Are there advantages to running one set up over another? I am not anticipating any thing but a daily driver with this set up, cost is a factor and if possible I would like to do it the system myself with a universal type kit.

I'm running an H-Pipe currently and think it's great. Sounds good idling, WOT or regular driving.

Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
Dual (not duel, thats fighting people at dawn with muzzle loading pistols) should probably be changed to True Dual.
The h-pipe (x-pipe would be the third option), is on a dual system. True dual is individual pipes from the manifolds back. I run true dual, which is probably the less popular as its a bit noisier and doesn't scavenge.

Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
Darn spell checker came up on dual. Maybe I should be a little more specific:
1. True dual exhaust, no cross over or H pipe, balance pipe, etc.. 2. Crossover or X-pipe 3. H pipe, like on a late 80's mustang. 4. Y pipe, similar to stock.

Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
true duals in 2.25" with either a H or X pipe. Im running an H pipe because its easier to fab in.
don't go too big on your piping. Bigger is not better, atleast in this case

Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
Yall are gonna make me eat a bullet.
TRUE DUALS MEANS NO X-PIPE, H-PIPE, OR ANY FORM OF CROSSOVER. TRUE DUALS MEANS SINGLE PIPES FROM HEADERS BACK, WITH NO FORM OF SCAVENGING! Duals is any 2-pipe system that uses a merge, collector, h-pipe etc etc etc. True duals are like you would find on a motorcycle, or my truck. Individual pipes only! I don't mean to yell, but after my initial post regarding clearing this up, 5 more pop up with the usage. Are we clear, better yet, are we CRYSTAL?

Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
I heard there was a Crystal Pepsi flashback party?
I'll run 2.5" system with an X if its in the budget once i get the motor in, if not its true duals out just behind the rear tires. Not sure I'll ever tweak it enough to need 3", especially with the '10 Camaro manifolds. |

Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
mines TRUE DUAL, even though I told the guy to put in a H pipe and he didn't, but I let it slide. Although it does bring up a question,,,,,,,,,,which is whenever I'm roaring down a step hill in a lower gear, or under any heavy deceleration, it will pop a time or two, and I was wandering if that had anything to do with being TRUE DUAL??? It's not a huge backfire or anything, just a annoying pop that makes my awesome sounding truck look bad.

Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
Just my 2 bits.
I run a true dual now with side exits, and I would say a H or better jet an X pipe is very important with side exits, as you only get half the engine out each side it doesn't sound as good as both pointed in the same direction.

Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
Hehe, I'm a nazi for nomenclature.
Ok no one quote the first part of that out of context.... Anyway, I just get on people for it because its one of those "buzzwords" that gets thrown around out of context and leads to further misuse. As an example, there is a difference between manifolds, and headers tho the terms are used interchangeably. The use of "true" in terms of dual exhaust has no reason to be used, if in fact, it isn't actually a true dual. I'm not upset with anyone, nor is it that big a deal...but since I have a platform, I'll run with it. FWIW, the reason it began to get misused is the prevalence of "dual exit" exhausts. They are NOT true dual, nor are they actually "dual" at all. Instead they are a single pipe exhaust with a y-pipe on the a$$-end, making two seperate exits. SRT4's, v6 mustangs and others are extremely guilty of this.

Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
You guys are awesome, I love a good discussion. The H-pipe definitely seems to be leading the pack. Thanks for the pic solidaxel, that is what I am looking for. I wanted some opinions from those that had actually run the different types of exhaust systems on trucks with this swap.
I had totally forgotten about Crystal Pepsi, wasn't it in between the TAB and JOLT cola's at The Stop And Go?

Re: Exhaust, duels, crossover, H pipe, or Y pipe?
I had a mustang 5.0l with flow masters a long time ago and I hated the drone. I want a nice sound with no DRONE. I don't know if I have ever heard walker mufflers before. Ill look into it. Thanks
